Gentlemen, I have noticed a bit of a noise on cold startups that does not go away until I completely reach operating temp. I have read quite a few threads on startup noise/rattle relating to the timing chain and oil pressure. Most of those threads had comments about the sounds dispersing after a few seconds. I had a large toyota oil filter in there and just changed to the small 90915-yzzd3 which did seem to help a bit. Is there anything concerning here? 300k miles on her but with a complete top end and timing chain done a few years back. Any thoughts or am I just being paranoid?

Does not sound good….. sounds like a pretty heavy knock. Maybe start by sending an oil sample to Black Stone Labs. They provide collection kits free of charge.

A/C compressor? You could remove the belt and see if it still makes the same noise

That first video sounds bad. Maybe an off topic question, but is it normal for the fan to rotate so slowly (in second video)?

Adding to this a bit. This a cold start only sound. Really hoping this is not a knock . It quiets down immediately when warm. The fan is really fast on cold start and settles down once the timing is normalized with the oil pressure build. I could be way off there though. Just a thought.

What oil filter have you been running?

Agreed Baldilocks, I have used their services many times. A fine service that I very much recommend. My oil is clean and nothing in the oil points to anything.

I’m not great at diagnosing sounds but it sounds to me like either timing chain slap or a rod knock. Might be the chain tensioner is worn out and leaking down oil pressure when it sits cold. Maybe try replacing that? Might be worth pulling the oil filter and cutting it open to look for flakes of bearing.

The entire chain assembly was replaced when I did my head gasket. This is a truck that is not driven daily and sits for about 1-2 weeks at a time. Ambient temps can range between 30-110 throughout my year. I feel like like its been louder on startup over the winter months.

Other than that startup sound, she is well behaved, no noise at operating temp and no noise at throttle and drives very well, stronger than before the head gasket failure and stays cool throughout quite a bit of load. She is just quite a bit louder than i can remember on start up but Ive also had two daughters born over the past 3 years I could be going crazy.

Why are you running 20W-50 oil?

I run 5W-30 per my oil cap.

Remove the belts and see if the cold startup noise is still there. It seems to coincide perfectly with the "wobble" of the fan. I think you may have a fan clutch issue.

Have you had any work done on the power steering pump?

Otherwise, that clunking doesn't sound good.

Get a mechanics stethoscope from harbor freight for $15 and start checking locations for sounds.

Drive belts and fan clutch were replaced a few years ago. Power steering pump is original and does leak a bit. Running 20w50 as that is what my mechanic recommended when we did the top end work. That is Toyotas recommendation for my temp range for everywhere in the world but the USA. Ill slice the filter that i recently removed and share the results.

Here are my last two filters.

the 1st video sounds just like the drive belts. spray water on them and if it goes away theres your problem.
could just be old & worn or under tensioned etd
Well I sprayed some water on the belts and the sound immediately went away… Thank you very much for that tip!

So maybe under tensioned since the belts are only a few years old? Would that make sense that the sound goes away when its up to operating temp?
