I have a '71 FJ40. The tire carrier was nearly frozen in place from rusty hinge bolts. I was able to remove the carrier this morning and am in the process of cleaning the hinge bolts and the hanger holes.

Before I put it back together I wonder if there is a way to make the hinges accept grease? How have others dealt with this?

I thought I might drill and tap for grease fittings, but I doubt I could force grease into there. I had an idea that might not be a good one. What about when I drill the holes for grease fitting I drill all the way through the hinge pin, take the carrier back off, then cut a groove down the length of each side of the hinge bolt/pin that intersects the drilled hole. This way when greasing the hinges the grease would be forced along the length of the bolts on each side of the bolt (to help spread the grease). Would that work???

What are your thoughts?

I put little Teflon bushings on either side that I got from SOR.

overanalyzing. spray with silicone now and then..helps keep the mess and drool to a min. anything can be done but why? if it were the pivot of a bulldozer blade or a dumptruck hoist exposed to repeated, heavy forces then zerk fittings maybe but it's not.

Hmmm... I though the early tire carriers came OEM with grease fittings?

These are my 2/71 hinges....
