Grease on the Axle Housing?

I have about 400 miles on my Birfield job and was wondering when one should see the axle housing start to lube up? My felt is still dry? I tried pushing as much grease as I could between the knuckle and the axle housing (the area I am pointing to in the picture). The other picture you can see the dry axle housing.

That looks like Norm's thumb. I wouldn't worry about it if you put some grease in there. Did you grease the knuckle bearings?

I grease in that arrow'ed location BEFORE inserting the birf/axle. I also grease the back of the ball (inboard area) before bolting on the 3 part seal. This way, the sphere is greasy and waterproof when I pull out of the garage, rather than whenever the grease works its way out there.

Thanks Doug, will do that next time.

No one mentioned anything nor did the FSM so I figured if you pack the cavity like Norm's photo then eventually the grease would find its way back there SOONER.

Man, that housing is a lot smoother than mine

I guess once a few birfs grenade and mar it up you will start looking all spanky clean

You can still manually grease up the ball on the outside. It will get pushed away, but leave a thin later of grease. It shouldn't be driven dry/degreased as a fine layer of rubber seal lip-eating rust will form. Or you can pump a half tube into the square plug up top of the knuckle and within a day it will start coming out the felt seal. Grease goes directly into that arrow-ed spot from the plug.
