Anyone have a creative way to mount their GPS?

What GPS units does everyone run?

I like my Garmin Nuvi, but might get something a bit MORE!

Its actually BECAUSE of mounting is why I haven't decided on the nav unit I am going to get. Yeah I know, not the right way but I need a functional nav and they are all a pain to use if its not intelligently mounted.

I got a garmin nuvi 750 for Christmas. I would like to pay someone that has topo maps for a copy on an SD card. It would have been handy this last trip I made.

Luckily, AFAIK my state didn't ban windshield mounted units. So I mounted mine just to the right of the instrument cluster hump on the dash. I tried mounting it in the left bottom corner in my LX, but it would have blocked a good chunk of visibility on the front left corner of the vehicle.

IMHO the gps needs to be as close to your forward visual field as possible unless you have the disipline to keep your eyes off of it until you are stopped.

EDIT: I know I have seen a company online that sells a plethora of mounting solutions for cell, gps, laptop, etc. I saw the link somewhere in the scangaugeII thread.

EDIT#2: Yes, RAM mounting solutions is the one I was thinking of, see below. Thanks Joey.

IA now charges a higher fee for SUV and truck registration. I'm glad my rig is still registered in WA, it only costs me about $50 a year and no smog since I am out of state for school.

It's costing me over $250 bucks to register a dang civic here in IA.:bang: That's almost an IPOR skid plate!

I have a III+ and a quest. For my 80 I got a RAM ball mount that is used to bolt onto like boat railing or round tubing. I got a u bolt that fit the mounting base, slid vacuum tubing/hose over the u bolt, and then mounted the u bolt/RAM ball mount on the rear view mirror stem up toward the top of the windshield. The mount has been there for some time now, and I have never had any problems with it it slipping or vibrating. I ran the power and antenna cables over the sunvisors and down the A pillar plastic trim and under the dash.

Depnding on what GPS you have, this may not be a good solution, but for smaller GPS units, I think it works pretty well.

Just got a Nuvi 255w, been looking at Topo maps....

Mounted mine as low on the windshield and as close to the pillar as possible on the left hand side of the window. I liked it there since it didn't block any view of the road yet I could still see it in my field of vision.

do you have pics? that's the area i was thinking of mounting my garmin.

I've begun to see in-dash stereo units that include a slide-out, swing-up LCD display, and I think some of those may offer GPS functionality. Like a built-in navigation unit that doubles as the control panel for your stereo. I have not spent any time researching these to see what the capabilities are, but just glancing at them in passing, they looked interesting.

I originally used my dash ash tray for a GPS mount for my old Garmin III. My Garmin V is there now. Very secure, but too far away for my old man eyes now. I am thinking of moving it to the lower left of the windshield. It's a pretty small unit and I can't see it blocking visibility. Should be easy enough to mount.

I have this one on order it removes the GPS from the window. Do a search for it, it comes with different ends to match different GPS mounts

I mounted my GPS V in the lower left corner of my windshield. Perfect position; it doesn't block my vision and if I need it NOW, it's right there.

I now have a Nuvi 660 mounted in the same spot, using the same base mount. Thats one thing I'll say about garmin, I like it when they stick with a common base mount so you can buy different attachments for it.

My mount has served me well for a StreetPilot 1 and 3, ipaq 5500, and a nuvi 660 now.
