My H42 has been sounding loud for a while, and over the past month has been tough to get into second until it's good and hot.

Now it won't go in 2nd while moving at all, without very creative gas and clutch manipulations. This does not work in traffic. Right now I'm shifting 1-3-4. It will go into second while sitting still.

All other gears are fine. Smooth from 1st to reverse. Gear oil looks okay (I haven't checked the drain plug yet, but looks okay at the fill hole).

I want a 5 speed. But if I can fix this for way less than a new H55F, I might consider it. Any chance there is some magic bushing I can get to from the top without having to drop the transmission?

Thanks.

define 'not going in"?
as in not at all.
or just grinds?

no way to fix from the top.

i'm guessing the synic is gone on second.

*edit* there is one thing that you could check. teh shift seat bushing.
pull the stick and check teh condition of the bushing under it.
but if it's not that then there's no easy fix.
easiest would be drop and replace with a used unit...much less than an h55 swap...but no where near as cool.

Swapping in a different used trans is way cheaper than an H55F though not nearly as cool...

Sounds like the 2nd gear syncro is toast. Trans has to come apart to repair this.

You might try some heavier weight oil. It might get a little more life out of the syncro until you can line up a replacement.

Try pushing down on the shifter when engaging 2nd gear.
If it goes in easy this way, it's probably the shifter seat and pins.
If it makes no diff. Looks like it's time for syncros.

Not without real effort and a lot of grinding.

Thanks, I'll definitely check the bushing out.

Will do this as well. If it would just wait till winter so this logging job I'm working will shut down, I could get the time to get the 5 speed in.

Good tip. Will do.

Thanks for all the replies, you all. Those all give me good places to start.
