I've owned my HJ47 since March and it has been a love affair - I think I'm passing up on a job in Hawaii just so I can keep the damn thing

Anyway, I've been knocking off all the standard PM's (fuel filters replaced, oil air, coolant, etc) and I started calculating my fuel consumption blah blah blah and I'm getting a pretty upsetting fuel economy of around 16mpg.

So, anyone know a good diesel shop in southern California, orange county area preferred? I'd like to get the injectors serviced and hopefully squeeze a few more miles out of the tank. Or any other suggestions on what to do. It fires right up, purrs like a kitten once warmed up and has very nice road manners.

Thanks all

Mileage sounds about right to me.

A BJ42 (about half the size of your 47) with a 3B (with 2/3 the cylinders) gets about 21-22mpg in what I'd consider typical US-style driving. 25mpg can happen if you're a very gentle driver, have no hills in the area, etc. Sellers have been pushing the 30mpg myth for as long as I've been on the scene but it just doesn't seem to be reality - keep in mind that part of the problem is that most of the countries with lots of diesel cruisers use the imperial gallon, not the US gallon, so apply an automatic 20% hit to whatever you were told.

So take a 21mpg baseline, add in the 500? extra pounds for the longer wheelbase, add in the generally poorer gas mileage of the 6 cylinder and.... 16mpg sounds about right.

If you want to change the injectors you can get a reman set on ebay from Aus for $200 or so (I think?). Just pop em in yourself.

I respectfully disagree with amaurer and think you should get better fuel economy. My (now sold) HJ60 got around 20 any day and never worse than 18, even loaded to the brim with a tent on top.

Your injectors could make quite a difference. Do you get any smoke when accelerating or on hills?

Yes, you can get the reman injectors from australia (more like $400 a set than 200) and put them in yourself. But any competent diesel shop can do them too, just search for an old style diesel injection/fuel injection shop.

How many miles on the engine? The pumps do get tired too...

cheers,
jan

With my upcoming 1HD-FT swap I too am interested in a quality diesel shop who knows about the older (non-computer controlled) diesels in SoCal/Orange County or Northern San Diego.

Duk, please fill us in if you have any luck with your search?

You are in Canada, correct? Are your numbers in imperial gallons?

20mpg imperial = 16.6mpg US, 18mpg imp. = 14.9 mpg us

I am in the US and I understand the difference between imperial and US gallons.

Still, no shop recommendations in Southern California?

Dan,

Thanks for the lead.

Find out who the local Denso service center is. Take it to them.

In NM and CO I use Central Motive Power. Looks like Diesel Injection Service in San Bernardino does it. Diesel Injection Service™ • Smoke Testing • Diesel Fuel Injector Testing & Repair • Truck Turbos & Fuel Pumps • Diesel E

That's close in my book, but probably not by Southern California standards. Really all you need is to find the closest Denso injection shop and have them check your injectors.

This guy is great in San Diego and can rebuild any injection pump and all injectors:

Brian Clark
Proprietor
Omega Fuel Injection
619-448-3295
1934 John Towers Avenue Ste B
El Cajon CA 92020

I bet you can mail him injectors and he will mail the good ones back.
cheers,
Jan

I think I told you about Dumas Fuel Injection in Long Beach? They rebuilt my Isuzu injectors and adjusted my pump. Fair prices and quick turn around too.

Doug

The rig has 295,000 km on the clock, some smoke when accelerating.

I gave a few places a call the other day. They all send them out and want $450-$800 regardless if I pull them or they do the labor. I wrote down the address for a place in Vancouver that others have talked about on the forum. I'll look into the one in long beach and san diego for sure too. I know it won't yield amazing results, but an extra 80 miles a tank wouldn't suck!

I'll, keep you all posted.

Dumas rebuilt my 4 injectors with new tips and test for around $240.00. I did the labor and brought them the injectors. They were also ready the same day.

We have basically the same injectors so your injectors would cost about the same per unit.
