I was making a slow right hand turn going down a slight slope up the street from my house today. The road was covered in a compacted frozen layer of snow and ice and the truck didn't straighten out after i made the turn. Gravity and momentum took the cruiser right into a small 5" diameter tree right off the side of the road. Front bumper, grill, pass headlight, the two small radiators (in front of the main radiator, assuming thats the tranny cooler and AC cooler?) and the hood is bent a little from the latch being pulled down. That custom grill I made is broke too.

Truck was doing 5-8 mph, but there was no stopping it. All I could do is sit back and watch. :crybaby:

I think the sun coming out earlier was just enough to cause the roads to melt up, and then that storm that pounded us later around 12 started turning that all into ice. Drove up to Jack's house this morning, drove down to protofab for some steel, and then I crash into a small tree 100yds from my house. Got to be kidding me....

So, ive heard good things about McCarran Autobody, but do you guys have any other recommendations? I'm thinking about having them fix all the damage except for the front bumper. I dont want the shop to spend all that money on a stock bumper when i'm going to build my own...

looking at my poor truck in the garage makes me sick :frown:

That SUCKS Matt! Bruce, the owner and body man extraordinaire, at Shaber Auto Body is the man (1626 Shaber Ave). Straight shooter as they get, small shop, super talented and has always treated me more than fair.

I know him; he's worked on numerous of our vehicles including my SpressoWagon. Tell him I sent you or I'd be happy to meet you there.

Dude, that really, really sucks. Sorry to hear it.

I too have heard that Concours is the best in town, but I don't know for sure.

You paying or insurance? Luckily, you/they should be able to source some used parts, so that will help with the cost.

Jack

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to have a claims rep come out and look at the damage. I wanted to take the bumper off and see what all needs to be fixed, but i'm going to wait until they look it over.

I have a $500 deductible, but after that the insurance will cover the rest. I'm going to take a look and see if I can order the parts from CDan, and leave the body stuff (not much) to the shop.

Since I dont want to drive the truck, i'll take some detailed pictures and go talk to both shops and see what they say.

pm me I still have the hood and most of the front from the 92 we cut up... it may take a few days as some of the the parts are at my brothers in lodi I think i still have the pass headlight... will have to look....

Wow, that sucks Matt. I am sorry to hear that. I am glad that it wasn't any more serious and that you didn't get hurt. Hopefully you can get everything fixed up and it doesn't end up costing too much. On the other hand, I am looking forward to seeing what kind of front bumper you will make now. I think it will be capable of taking trees out? :)

Jon

Thanks Jon. I'd say that I'm going to try and make the front bumper as strong as possible. I'd like to think that if I did have a stronger front bumper, the truck wouldn't be in such bad shape right now...

i'll post some pics. It doesnt look too good....

That's a drag Matt.
Donno anything about the body shops around, but just wanted to share my condolences.

You need to at least come up with a better story!:D

Kidding aside, at least you have the insurance to make up the cost. Body work from what I gather is EXPENSIVE. Having done MUCH of MY OWN, I now understand WHY that is so. It SUCKS, and its time consuming. So she'll be good as new in no time at all.

The story is pretty lame.... Driving by the tree (tiny tree at that) on my way to work amazes me at how much it crumpled the front end.

Here are the pics... the right front fender got hit only because there was a concrete wall just a few feet beyond the tree. I went off the road at a 45* angle.

Is that small "S" shaped hose just a small cooler for the power steering? I'm trying to see if there's any damage that will keep me from driving it out of the driveway onto a trailer. That seems to be the only pinched hose.

Yep, PS cooler.

The fin type cooler on the DS in front of the AC condenser is the tranny cooler. Those should be the only two "coolers" in the front other than the engine cooling system.

Ok, thanks Jack. Now I just need to load it up on my dads trailer and take it down to a few of the shops. I'm glad he has a car hauler, it makes situations like this a lot easier....

Maybe an artifact of the photo angle but it appears the passenger front tire might be out of alignment?

Matt, if for any reason, you'd be better off winching the rig onto the trailer let me know...I can stop by whenever and help you winch it onto the trailer...

The tire is just turned to the right a bit in my garage. I had both hands firmly on the steering wheel, and I didnt feel a jolt in the steering at all. Just the contact with the tree, and then the slight impact with the wall on the front endge of the fender.

I might need some help winching it up on my dads trailer, but im not sure yet. I need to talk to the insurance company tomorrow about taking it to a shop. I'll let you know if i do. Thanks Dan!

That sucks Matt, hope it works out for you.

I'm taking the truck down to Concours this morning so they can take a look at it and get a quote on the damage. They said they deal with Travelers (my insurance) so hopefully I can get the ball rolling finally.

I hope they dont expect me to leave the truck overnight so they can look at it. I'd like to start tearing it apart so I can tell Ray what I need off his donor truck.

The worst part about all this is how long its going to take. I just know I wont have the thing back on the street for another month.. HOPEFULLY my insurance guy will actually call me back or answer his phone today also...
