Gil at Concours said I need to have an independent claims adjuster come out and look at it and get a dollar amount on the damages. Since its a 14 year old vehicle he said they may just total the damn thing.

If its totaled and I buy it back, it may be to much money to insure the salvaged title.

I'm so pissed right now i cant even see straight.

gah. that would suck. why is it any more to insure a salvaged vehicle? if it has been fixed to a road legal status what would be the difference? I would hate for this to happen to my truck. keep us informed as to what is going on.

Finally got an appointment to have the truck looked at on tuesday, a whopping TWO weeks after the accident.

Travelers must not think their customers are that important.

If you don't like Travelers you'd hate State Farm! Nothing as major as what you are experiencing Matt but AAA has done right by us for the past couple years. And Allstate before that...but they, in the end, were way too proud of those policies for us to be able to afford their "switch to Allstate and save" rhetoric.

Will you be hang'n that bumper on the garage wall, kind of a conversation starter for the future, just think of the stories you could tell about the BIG ONE that got away.

Not to mention it really is the silly season for insurance and body shops. We had 40 accidents in Winnemucca in November, which is about 70% above average.

The body shops are lovin' it I'm sure.:hillbilly:

Update....

Had an Independent adjuster come out and look at the truck today. He was honest and understood why I had the truck, and what my intentions are for it. He knew its value and how hard good ones are to come by too. I was nervous at first, but after it was all said and done I think things went well.

I'm going to start tearing into it tomorrow to see what all needs to be replaced.

I guess the only way to take the refrigerant out of the AC system is to take it to a shop, right? There's no kit or device you can use to drain the system at home? If so, ill have to winch it back up on the trailer to do so...

Matt,

So, is it looking better now? I mean, getting it repaired and not totaled. Sort of sounds like it from what you said. Hopefully it all gets fixed up soon, because I am looking forward to your front bumper build :)

Jon

Jon, yeah its looking better so far. The appraiser said that the truck is in good condition and the damages arent too bad. I'm starting to pull it apart today.

Dismantled the front end today. Here's a few pictures....

Something tells me the PO didnt install the alternator bracket correctly. Looks to me like the bolt and small block it goes through need to be flipped to the top. How do you set the proper tension on the belt?

Also, it looks like the oil leak is coming from the oil pump seal. Here's the FAQ thread.... Can I just take a large breaker bar and break the nut loose on the crank shaft pulley? Or can it only be done by using the "bump the starter" method? I'd rather not do it that way cause it sounds sketchy. https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/72514-how-replace-oil-pump-seal-w-pics.html

Picture of the front, and the broken/ bent stuff!

Once everything is almost back together, I'm going to take the truck down to a shop in sparks to have some lines made up for the AC dryer. That way I can move it out of the way for my bumper build.

I labeled and bagged all the hardware, so hopefully i'll put this thing back together right.. :grinpimp:

the breaker bar and starter method is the only way I could get it loose..biggg impact didn't work...as for the screws on the pump cover use #3 phillips the blue ones for deck screws worked best and get a couple you will break one or two getting them loose...also when you get the gasket/ o ring get new screws also..they get chewed up getting them out...dont forget the crank seal and the locktight for the ballancer bolt....it's a 2 banana job....

btw you are correct on the alt bolt....you may want to get some toyota belts...that are designed for that idler...they are alot quieter...the ribbed ones make noise...the toyota ones are cheep and come as a matched set...good luck..

What a great chance to do a bunch of PM's! Kind of one of those lemonade things I guess.

On my Fj40 it only takes about 30 minutes to get it stripped down to that point, I sure wish Mr. Toyota had kept the folding front apron design on later models, it makes life soooo easy.

Gotta agree with everyone else. Now is the time to go to town on PM.

Also give me a chance this weekend to look around, I might have everything to do the oil pump seal including the screws.

Speaking of which, I need to gather everything up (80 stuff) I have and have a sale...:grinpimp:

ok, now its question time!

1. What other PM's should I do right now?

2. For those that have done the pump seal, where did you manage to find a torque wrench that goes up to 310ft/lbs?

3. I'm assuming the only way to break the bolt free is to put the wrench/breaker bar under the pass. frame and bump the starter? That just sounds scarey to me

4. Would it be ok to use the impact screwdriver set (the one you have to hit with a hammer) to break the phillip screws free? Dont want to break them...

As far as torqueing the bolt down, i'm going to try and build a tool that will hold the pulley in place while I turn the bolt. There's a few in the faq thread...

and Jack, let me know if you still have your FSM, i will gladly buy that from you too cause ive been meaning to get one! I'll hold off on ordering the seal and other parts just in case you have them at home. Let me know if you do and i'll swing by with some cash.

Thanks!

A SALE :eek::eek:

Looking forward to seeing what you might have that I can use :hhmm:

Matt,

are you going to just do all the work yourself in replacing parts and then take it in to have the body work done? Looks like you have made some good progress getting things done on it.

Jon

That's the plan Jon. I'm going to fix what I can, then take it to a body shop for the rest.
