Hello Cruiserheads:

I just finished a 13BT swap but haven't wired up my glow screen yet. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible and have it be totally manual. As there is only one wire coming off of the glow screen, I was thinking of running it directly to a momentary switch, which would be hooked to something in ignition. No glow screen controller, no temp sensor. Just hold it for 5 seconds and go. Is this safe?

Thanks.

when you say glow screen are we talking about a intake preheater? Or grid heater? or is this the little glow screen that tell you if your glow plugs are hot enough?

I presume the first one. This one will have to go to the experts. But without a controller there is the possiblity of getting too hot and burning out the coil. ???

I am manual now on my glowplugs, not worried if they burn out, 20 bucks each. But a intake preheater may not even be availible in NA if you wreak yours. I am not wise enough to comment on any of this.

So consider my post a bump. :)

You will have the 24V glowscreen in there as you are aware. Hitting it with 12V's will heat it up, but slower then the 24V would. I know one 13BT install into a BJ60 in BC, where the owner has dealt with the issue. I will contact him in the next few days and request his permission to hook the two of you up. He did a lot of research before hooking up his system. I know he kept the 24V screen, and is 12V to it. I do not recall if he went rocker switch or used the stock BJ60 glow system.

Correct me if im wrong but isnt the glow screen connected in series with the glow plugs? If so wouldnt it be a bad thing to run that circuit missing this resistor?

Hello Diesel Dude!

Yes and no.

There is a bus bar that connects all the glow plugs together, and there are two resistors in a SuperGlow system between the glow plug wiring assembly and the busbar.

The 13BT does not use glow plugs. As Brownbear said, there is a glow screen at the top of the intake manifold...the "intake heater" which heats up the intake air.

Thanks for clearing that up I thought he meant the coil in the glow plug circuit. Working on cummins engines I am used to that screen being called an air heater.
:whoops:

on Bj40's isn't the little glow indicator screen called a glow screen as well. On equipment at work here they rip off the cover so they can light smokes of it.

I thought I saw the resister element on some BJ40's.

So Greg how availible are replacement glow screens if one should short out? Can you get them from japan no problem? just wondering. Or is the possibility of one wearing out slim?

Good point Stone; Certainly use a HD relay. If you can find someone parting out a BJ60, grab the main relay in the super glow system. Lowenbrau from this site has a BJ60 he is parting right now. I believe he posted about it in one of the for sale sections on Mud (parts for sale???).

I believe Sheldon priced one out once. There are none in stock in Canada that I am aware of. We are all on the steep end of the learing curve with the JDMs and I've no idea on typical life of the intake heater screens. I'm sure we will find out, and as with many things now...the world is getting smaller and smaller. You may simply have to wait a little while.

The the fellow I was mentioning earlier put the 13BT into an 81 BJ60. He used the existing glow system, which was the simple "key to the glow position" then start. That's one step away from the push button on the dash. I sent him an e-mail Matt, and await his response.

Thanks guys. Obviously it's a little more complicated than I thought. I was hoping to keep it really simple but that might not be the best bet. I was also hoping to be able to close the checkbook for a few weeks after the swap. Pipe dreams. I'm going to have to get another job!

Like Stone says, should be simple and not too much. 1 push button, 1 HD relay, some loom and the wiring...

Does Lowenbrau have the high side relay still available from the BJ60 he is parting out? I think it is in the FS section???
