Anybody know how to get a stain off of a granite/stone countertop? My apartment has light grey countertops that look like they are granite or some other manufactured stone. Something put a nice red stain on it and im freaking out b/c it seems to have soaked in..... Any hope in removing this or is my 1k deposit down the s***ter???

I have granite in my kitchen and travertine slabs in my bathrooms. Different types of stone require different cleaning methods. Granite is easy, little bit if baking soda on a wet towel and a little buffing not too much you can remove the sealant. There is a great all purpose stone cleaner at lows MAGIC COUNTER works great. Just follow directions... :)

Not sure if they are sealed or not..... When they get wet the stone stays a darker color tlll it finally dries out. Thinking Ill go to lowes and try the stone cleaner if the baking soda doesent work. Thanks for the advice.

Clean than seal after. I might be wrong but granite should be sealed at least twice a year to prevent staining. It sounds like it might be time if the stone changes color when it gets wet.

Try WD-40 first. It will not damage the top, but is great for removing stains from fabrics, concrete etc.

File this under confidence booster not tech help... some melted butter made it onto the granite tops I had.. a pretty good dark splotch about 4" by 6"... came out with a few warm soap/water washes over a couple of weeks.

Counter might not be stone, might be concrete. Anyway, concrete and some stone are sort of "living" surfaces--they will stain and get marks with age. Try to figure out exactly what kind of surface it is, then call someone who installs them and ask them what to do. They might know some tricks.

If it's stone, I think muriatic acid might work, but you might have to do it on the whole counter. But then again, don't take my advice, find someone who really knows what he is talking about.

I use to work for someone who had a enormous amount of experience in granite bench tops owning his own quarry and exporting the finsished tops.

He told me red wine is forever.
Granite is porous unless it is sealed.

Muriatic acid will take the gloss surface off the stone and etch it and rough it up. It will get the stain out though!

This week on Ask This Old House they talked about getting out stains in granite/marble counter tops, they said to use a poultice available at most home center stores, it is made of crushed limestone amongst other things, you leave it on for ~48 hrs and it absorbs the stain. HTH.

Hmmm, reminds me what we did to clean up our marble fireplaces: mixed baking soda and bleach into a paste, spread it on and cover with saran wrap for a day--it will bleach stains out. Of course, if that is an artificial surface, it might bleach the color out, too! Maybe try it on an inconspicuous spot, and if it doesn't change the color of the stone, try it on the wine stain?

Sounds to me like you have concrete counter tops that have not been sealed properly. Changing colors with water is a sure sign that the material is not sealed. Call your landlord and have him fix it. Don't spend your time and/or money messing with it.

You all missed the most obvious way to fix the stain...just pour more of your stain-creator all over the counter...so it all matches... :D
