Getting my butt kicked trying to CA smog my 60!

Well, whatever you did, congrats for getting it to pass the old-fashioned way.

So, @Gadjeep , you adjusted the idle mixture screw in order to get the correct AFR at idle, but doesn't the Kalifornia smog test also take measurements at one or two addition RPM settings?

If that is the case, I can see using smaller diameter main jets (primary main at least...and secondary main only if the test is at WOT) as another factor that one can change in order to improve the likelihood of passing...

I'm not a fan of changing jets to get the emissions down unless they've been changed at some point. The factory jetting is more than sufficient to pass smog if the other systems are intact. I'll find and post my final numbers when I get back home but they were very, very low and the only consumable part I replaced was the cat (and that was probably totally fine, come to find out).

If your (stock jetted) carb is causing a rich condition replacing jets is only masking the root cause of the problem.

Here are the first and final tests.

Those are some clean numbers. You can see how fixing your AI brought the residual O2 up. Lots of CA smog threads here over the years seem to end with AI system fixes.

My recent CA tests have had a 15 mph test as well as a NOX measurement, wonder why yours didn't?

For whatever reason, both smog shops used a two speed speed without the dyno. I believe it's because most of the cruisers they've seen are 80s with full time 4wd so they assume 60s are as well. They only test for nox under load.

So after all this work you did you are going to sell the 60? NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!:bang:

I'm thinking about it. I'm doing a lot more dirtbike riding these days than wheeling so it may be going to a happy, new owner.

What part of the EB are you in? I'm sure I must have seen you around at some point. I'm in San Leandro, there are a few clean ones around here and at least one of them is also on mud.

You will regret it my friend, not right away but later on. I live in Pittsburg and working in Castro Valley,i drive through SL along 580 and take the 150th exit and head to Lake Chabot road. I haven't driven the 60 in about 6 mos. or so and currently non-op but still runs.

@Gadjeep so I guess we need to schedule some wheeling trips then... Not much snow in the sierras this year so we need to hit the eastern side for a weekend. Lots of good stuff on the other side

@lcolon I'm going up to the sierras on the weekend of the 29th to take my mom and my aunt up Shuteye Peak near Bass Lake. It's pretty cool up there.
