My dad was making fun of my roo bar this weekend, calling it ugly and overkill. Which I don't disagree, but i feel it has heritage. It has horrible angle of entry, but I'm not a heavy wheeler - logging roads and light 4x4 only.

Powdercoater around the corner will make it purdy for $150. What say you mudders?

Don't take this the wrong way, because I think your troopy looks great! And I rarely if ever offer my opinion, because opinions are like @@sholes...everyones got one.

But, personally....I'd take what ever money you can get for that roo bar in scrap, that thing is absolutely hideous

But that's my opinion of course :)

AHAHAHA! Classic. I wouldn't post on mud if I didn't want to hear everyone's opinion.

Been working through the front bumper thread in the 40 section seeing if there is one that catches my eye, but so far - nothing really sticks out.

I think Rufus has one on his troopy that is keen looking.

I appreciate your honesty!

They are starting to ban those type of bullbars down here. You certainly cant buy them new, and in a few years I reckon we will be flat out getting past a yearly inspection with it on. All bullbars now have to be able to deflect a person up onto the bonnet instead of under the car if you hit someone. (I think if you hit someone with or without a bullbar on a 40 series its gunna hurt them either way) Unsure what your regulations are over there..

Unless your worried about hitting some sort of wild animal, id go with the stock look or an old school ARB..

fjdave,

Aren't regulations great !

Over here, we have cars with 5 mph bumpers, designed to protect us from hitting anything.......... if we ever should drive that slowly. Maybe that's why the little-old-ladies drive so slow--they "get" the math behind the design.

I can see a need for a bullbar out in the countryside where animals roam freely over large distances.
Shouldn't have a real need in a metropolitan city, though. A rancher from out of town is expected to slow down and follow the city traffic rules.

It seems that the existing regulations shouldn't have been changed unless there was a problem. So, are there a number of angry drivers just mowing down folks crossing city streets? Or are there "wild pedestrians" wandering the vast open spaces and outback? The style of bumper is your least worry. You couldn't make a bumper system soft enough to allow survival after being hit by a 4,000 pound projectile.

Years ago in the American West, when wild animals roamed the countryside, we used to have "cow-catchers" mounted to the front of locomotives, that theoretically scooped up the animal and flung it to either side of the train tracks, (just not on TOP of the train !) So..........maybe you need cow-catchers on your vehicles, instead of bull-bars, at least for city driving ! Of course, you then would need another regulation: for rubber sidewalks and curbs. And then require each city and town to install padded nets to catch the ones that bounce ! Oh...... and rooms with padded walls for the people who design such regulations.

Now, now.......Big Brother will take care of you.

There is a minority mob here in aust called 'the pedestrian council' They basically are a bunch of left wing green extremists that want nothing more then to ban the motor car and have everybody walk everywhere. To them, 4wd's are the root of all evil. Every time some poor kid get accidently run over in a driveway or the like the councils spin doctors get to work, and the cause is always the sheer bulk and excessiveness of the 4wd that caused the accident, not the driver. They recently embarked on a campaign trying to ban bullbars fullstop. A few petitions went around against the idea, and the council is back in their cave dreaming up the next crazy plan. A change of state government here is NSW at least has seen an extreme right wing group hold the balance of power in parliament, so the pedrestrian council may have their wings clipped for a while. Either way its always the exremist minoritys that have the loudest voices and get the attention and turn us into a nanny state (hey josh hj47)

Personally a nice bullbar on a 60 80 or a 100 dresses up the car and adds to the appeal city or country.
40's and 55's look better in standard bumper form and bullbars dont suit them (an original arb a possible exception), expecially the ones made by farmer joe out of surplass railway line or the old farm gate welded on the front of the car.
The day I bought my 45, the bullbar was the very 1st thing removed and replaced with a chrome 75 series factory bumper bar (and I sell bullbars for a living!!)
sorry to get off the track of your thread dukface....its your car, and at the end of the day only has to please you!

Dave

I think Rufus has one on his troopy that is keen looking.

I have the same type on both the 45 and the 42. They came with the trucks. (45 is from Brisbane and the 42 from Auckland.) Seems like they are a standard aftermarket item. I have no idea which company makes them. They seem easy enough to fabricate. If you need better photos of mine I'd be happy to snap a few.

I had considered importing a Troopy with a roo bar like yours but the owner was unwilling to cut it off the truck for transport. I do not like those types. Serious overkill and a lot of extra weight.

OK Dave, I'll bite...

I'm not a huge fan of them either, and unless they are supported at the top with fender protectors, they tend to fold back into the grille anyway in an impact. My FJ40 LX came with the exact same one as yours and I thought it made my rig look like a football helmet. I made a nice, simple winch bumper and I reckon it looks much better.

HOWEVER, I fully support a person's right to have one fitted to their rig and the I think that the Pedestrian Counsel needs to take along walk off a short pier. Their latest crusade here is to lower our city speed limit from 25 - 32 MPH to 15 - 20 MPH. I can't wait until pedestrians are required to wear helmets and body armour here...

So perhaps leave it on, just because you can:hhmm:

Cheers,

Josh

I don't like it, but I imagine the idiot, slowpoke touron Prius driver going 15 under won't like it either.

Keep it, make it clear to slow drivers that they're putting their lives on the line every time they drive like a moron.

I like this discussion, interesting about people in oz trying to ban them - how do the truckers feels about that? I remember clipping along the backroad from Sydney to Brisbane in my flatmates station wagon at night - we had a couple really close calls with some roos (one jumped in front, then back towards the shoulder, then back again and almost hit the tail of the car!)

After that, I tucked in behind the next truck till we got closer to Brisbane.

It had some fender guards but I cut em off - aluminum wont do much, but I've been contemplating getting new ones fitted. I'm torn - I like the look of both stock and with the bar. It won't be for many years till the troopy goes back to total stock/restored - maybe never.

I like hearing what everyone has to say though! Thanks!

I got rid of mine, actually I just removed but still have it in the garage. A bit too much for my use. They can limit the damage if you hit a deer but you just never know much until run something over.:)

I think that jungle gyms that big destroy the beauty of a 4X-series front-end. I've seen after-market bumpers that complement the 4X-series lines but, for me, that isn't one of them!

is the old school one is the one everyone seems to pine for with the "catchers mask"

old school bumper

Thats the one I was talking about. I think it looks pretty good if you need a bullbar. Strong too....

You should keep it and put some stickers on it we have in Aus

"A bullbar in the bush is worth more than a pedestrian in the city"

"Ban stupid pedestrains not bull bars"

"Here Skip"
