I found this fuel filter for considerable less that the usual prices out there and wanted to verify it is genuine. I don't kave a known genuine filter here to compare. The Baldwin filter I have is much heavier and of a different internal design.

It screams genuine to me.

Looks genuine to me. The fakes usually have poor lettering on the part number label.

When warning lamp is "Lightening".. odd word choice and spelling.. I wish I had a genuine one around to compare.

Edit.. had a quick google.. and it seems a lot of OEM filters have this mis-spelling..

Genuine Engrish!

I have genuine examples, but they are 20-25 years old with slightly different print on the filter. But they also talk about 'lightening'. Inside they are idential to what is pictured in the first post.

Sorry, I've changed the link to a better example.

I know they are fake because they are for sale in Malaysia for a fraction of the genuine price (imported parts are very expensive in Malaysia). Look carefully at the lettering, centring etc of the part number on the packaging.

Oops, now I look closely, the packging on yours looks like the fake. But the fake listing on Lazada could be a stock image. If yours came from an overseas (not UAE or Japan) ebay seller, I would be suspicious. But the internals of the filter look identical to a genuine one.

I don't think I have helped matters!

Thanks all, I knew there was a possibility this was fake when I bought it - I knew I'd want to verify once received. I'll be returning it and sticking to known good suppliers going forward. Saving some money is good but not at the expense of my engine.

I think the black plastic threads confirms fakeness, thanks for sharing.
Funny though.... this is from the picture on PartSouq: "INTRUCTION" and "LIGHTENING"

Well we have plenty of people talking about 'steering dampeners' and 'injector pumps' so perhaps Toyota just picked up the parlance of online owner communities.

Least expensive fuel filters I've found for a brand I trust is Hengst from Summit Racing. $15/ea.

Available at Amazon for less considering delivery (if you have Prime that is)

Buying from Amazon greatly increases the odds of getting counterfeit filters. Roll the dice as you see fit.

Edit: I guess if they're going to counterfeit filters, it takes exactly the same effort to counterfeit OEM filters, and then they can charge twice as much.

I did buy oil filters from Amazon for $15/ea, Mahle OC275's. They look fantastic, wish I'd bought all they had.

If you're looking at aftermarket filters in the first place, then the fake OEM type is still a usable candidate in my opinion. The construction is basically identical to original and it's just a paper element inside, no tech.

That said, my days of using aftermarket filters are long behind me. Given that OEM filters are pretty cheap if bought in bulk from Partsouq, it's a false economy to look at aftermarket stuff.
