Current 62, 75, 80 series owner and looking into getting a 200 series as a family suv. I like the way 08 to 11 model year looks but the Wifey prefers the 16 to 21 year model year. Question I have is what are the major differences (tech, safety etc.) in the model year. I get the price difference and the way they look is different but what else. Did a quick search and didn’t find anything so wanted to ask.

In the 2016-2021 range, one difference is in July 2018 Toyota moved to a capacitive touch screen for the center display. 2016 through June 2018 used a resistive touch screen which is not as responsive.

My Land Cruiser experience starts with my 2016 so I'm not that familiar with the differences compared to those earlier years.

Silly question. Get what your wife wants ;)

But seriously, after you get done with the forum faqs linked above, spend some time with a Google search using something like ā€œyear to year differences in 200 land cruisers ih8mudā€ and you’ll get hits. It’s a common question.

Are u looking at LC or LX? That matters because LX got some features before LC did.

For LC:

2020+: new front differential design…maybe better/stronger differential carrier??

2018+: KDSS bolt change, automatically power-folding outside mirrors, late-2018s have new radiator design, late-2018s have capacitive touch screen on center display, powered lift gate, non-mandatory rear entertainment, newer transmission software (flashable on 2016-2017), and new key (very cool) design.

2016+ LC also gains bigger front brakes, 8-speed auto, semi-aniline leather of the LX, and has better buttons arrangement than prior years.

While I'm sure the capacitive screen is a nice upgrade, the older resistive screen really isn't too bad. A lot better than the early resistive touch screen phones, that's for sure.

I conducted this exact type of search when I was looking at used 200’s back in 2020. I don’t recall where it was, but I found a table which told me - among other things - that the 2014 I was considering had ventilated seats while the 2009 did not.

Hey question @Madtiger: I have a 2017 LC and it's got the 8MM bolts on the KDSS underneath. Personally confirmed while doing my lift. Is that normal or did someone change them out?
My ā€˜17 has the recessed Allen screws. Maybe late in the model year there was a change? I’m sure no one changed them out unless there was crash damage needing replacement of the entire valve/system. It not easy!

It's a whole lot of work, as Sandroad said. Most likely just came from the smaller of the two factories or while they were phasing in the change.

Ventilated seats on LC were introduced for 13 model year. Along with HID headlamps, much more modern MFI screen in the dash, radar cruise.. I'm definitely forgetting stuff.

Bluetooth audio streaming was 2010, along with factory tinted windows IIRC.
