Question about gears.

I have a 1985 FJ-60 With a small block chevy motor with a RV cam. So far I have installed over drive, Did a C-channel kit by trail tailor, 42 gallon chevy suburban gas tank, New springs with 3'' lift.
Transmission, Transfer case, and Differential are stock. 33 inch tires.

I live in Pittsburgh, Pa. We have a lot of steep hills. With the setup now I have to down shift to second a lot more then I feel that I should have to.

I have a set of 3rd members with 4:88 gears and an ARB locker in rear, These are new I bought for an old FJ40 that rusted out before I got around to installing. I was told that all of the 3rd members should fit in the FJ-60 axel?
Also would the 4:88 gears help with going up steep roads or make it worse?

4.88s and 33s on a final :1 trans ratio is getting around 3400 rpm at 65mph. The SB has the powder but fuel and engine will suffer.

4.11 would get my vote or jump up to 35s/37s to roll that rpm out a bit.

Just my .02

J
Would like to use the 4:88 if possible, as it is all new gears and ARB air locker was $2000. and has been sitting in garage for four years.
If I go to 35'' and with the 27% over drive it should be ok on highway, and no OD. in city or off road hills would the 4:88 with 35" be usable??

Ok

My first 60 was this.
5.7 TBI with a ranger overdrive and a stock 4 speed. It ran 4:56 gears with 35x12.5/R16 tires on a 4" lift (SUA)
At 70-75 it was around 2300-2500 RPM if I remember right.

BUT that ranger overdrive is LOUD at that speed. so word of warning.

Longest drive I did on it was Colorado to Virginia all interstate and I kept up with traffic and passed tractor trailers.
At that point it was new to me so I did not push it (and the PO told me keep it at 75 or under for comfy sake).

4:88 are going to suck.

Im running a 5.3, Ranger, 4sp, and 4:11 gears with 35's. Its perfect on highway but crawl is terrible, so Im adding 4:1 t case gears this winter. With everything, you ought to do the math up front, otherwise its going to be wrong one way or another. IMHO, 4:88 gears are too much, especially for 33's, I would only run 4:56 on 35's or larger. Like a lot of others have already said, you will be better off all around with 4:11s. And like someone once told me; an expensive mistake is still a mistake.

Thank you for All the help I will go with the 4:11's, But like you said an expensive mistake can be a mistake. I would like to know What make of gears and bearings are best, As I know that there is a lot of cheap parts being imported?
