Gearing and v8 questions

I am planning on buying a 60 series in the very near future and am planning on doing an SOA and running 35s. I believe the stock gearing is 3.73 but I am not sure. What would I need to accomodate the larger tires? I am also planning on doing a v8 conversion with ranger torque splitter or doing an h55f. which is better? I am planning on doing either a SBC 283 or a Ford 351W. When I do the SOA do I have to cut and turn the knuckles if I do the hy-steer? I know I am asking a lot of questions but I am planning on doing it right the first time.
 
Ok here goes. I have a 1987 HJ60 with a 1995 1HZ diesel in it. I choose 4.11's and 37" MTR's because my power torque curve is best at 2200 to 2500 RPM at 70 mph. What you have to do is *decide* on your motor, then do the research to figure out its power torque curve at highway speed and build your gearing (read tranny R&P's) and tire size around that. As far as what is better a manual or an auto, that is up to you. I have an H55 and I LIKE manual trannys. That said I belive in autos for serious four wheeling. For a driver *mild* 4x4 truck I say manual. You dont HAVE to do anything, with respect the cutting and turning those axles. I WOULD. I bought some kick ass axles that already were cut and turned. A lot depends on your lift. If you are using STOCK springs and ONLY 35's then maybe you dont have to cut and turn them. If you are using LIFT springs like me (OME) and your going to larger tires then to get proper drive line angles you SHOULD cut and turn them.

thanks for the info. i was planning on going with a manual tranny and maybe ome springs once i get the cash. i was planning on building the engine for lower rpm torque. i built a 283 for my 78 fj40 and it worked out to be just about perfect. i will do some more research before i decide on the gears. how is the h55f for strength compared to a stock 4 speed with a torque splitter?
 
When I did my V8 swap I had the H55 five speed but went with the NV4500. The NV was easier to mate with the GM bell housing. Also the NV is better suited to be mated with a V8 than the H55. They cost the same if buying new and the gearing in the NV is lower so you don't have to go as deep with the axle ratios. With the NV you only one adapter for your T-case.

Uhh... Not to sound too much like FZJ80_Guy, but...
DIESEL! DIESEL! DIESEL!
Cube for cube, you absolutely, positively can not beat a diesel for low end
torque. Period. Add a propane injection setup and you've got the HP as well.

In case you can't tell, diesel is my religion. :D
 
i would love to do diesel but i don't really know how hard the conversion would be and any research i have done to try to find an engine has just shown me that they are very pricey. if anyone would like to give away a diesel or a complete 80 series i would be willing to take it off their hands ;)

I agree with HJ60 guy. You can even put in a chebby 6.2 or 6.5 turbo without to much trouble. They are not so pricey as I understand it.

Marks adapters in Oz has all that stuff.
