Most gear reduction starters are pulled from mid prodction FJ60's. You may want to post up in the 60's sections.

@orangefj45 sells them. try him. his name is georg

Toyota also sells them(reman) or they did a few years back, even if you asked for a stater for say 1970(or whatever year that came with a non GR)....you got a gear reduction unit.

$70 sounds much better even with a set of new contacts. My memory was at $120...

think the -84 refers to a "reman"

I use the GR on everything, also have a Mean Green(did not buy new) and the OEM is every bit as strong as the MG

mine was just used, not reman'd or polished. from his personal stash i think. works frickin' great though

Do you have to do any re-wiring? Or is it plug in and play?

two mounting nuts, 1 nut for the hot leg from the battery and a QD connector from the ignition switch. you will most likely need a new, longer hot leg from the battery. 18" will make it but is very tight. 24" is plenty. takes about 30 mins to swap out.

Anybody bought the rockauto, acdelco or the one off the densoproducts.com site? They look the same but rockauto one is 35 bucks cheaper. Hope this isn't considered a thead hack. If it is sorry. Still learning my manners.

You will need to dead-end the small (I think white w/black stripe wire{16 ga?} going to the coil.-not needed

The FJ60 gear reduction reman is 28100-60070-84. The published list price is $113.82 exchange, mudder $85.37 exchange. Of course to avoid the core charge($30.00) you would need a gear reduction core.

Yes, you'll need another hot cable from the battery. Not wanting to step on any toes here, but if you buy from your FLAPS, you can use your old (non-GR) starter as the core, 'cuz they don't know the difference...not that I would ever condone such a practice.

Changing the starter motor from series wound to permanent magnet means the ballast bypass is no longer needed?
Please explain.

That is not a gear reduction starter.

yeah i edited that post. i rushed it. my bad

i think he means the wire that feeds the coil the full 12+v while the key is in START position to give the spark a boost, no? it bypasses the resistor i think.

edit: that espresso is causing all kinds of havoc....there isnt anywhere to plug in that resistor bypass wire on the GR motor. if thats what you are asking.

Thank you guys for all the info! I think it's the starter. I turn the key no noise or anything else for that matter. I need to clean the contacts but when I touch the nodes with a screwdriver got nothing out of it still so I assumed starter and will clean contacts when replaced. Does that sound correct?
