Gauging Interest in a value-priced 100 Series Metal Drawer System

OregonLC - Your drawer idea is a good one. I also may be interested in this system rather than build my own. I haven't done a drawer build mainly because I haven't had the time. I do literally have a pile of rackmount server rails. I can take some pictures of different examples and post them. I will try to go by my old server room tomorrow and pickup some different sets.

Also not sure if you guys have seen this link that shows Ironman Metal Drawer installation. They make these drawers for the 100's also but I'm not sure if anyone has imported them into the US yet. I'm sure they will be less than the ARB system. They might even be a clone of the ARB's as some of the Ironman stuff seems to be...

I didn't know you had the same idea as me! Maybe we talked about it on chat at some point.

What is he bolting into at :43? It looks kind of offset from where I would imagine a bolt hole would be. I really would prefer not to drill into the floor if possible.

Thanks for the link. Those Ironman drawers have the same slider arrangement as do the Slee drawers - roller bearings that support a box section attached to the drawer. Judging by the fact that the one guy was able to easily move a double set frame by himself and by how light the drawer boxes are I can say for certain that the ones we make will be more substantial.

Keep the ideas coming guys!

I guess this means i will have to head to work one day this week VS. telecommute. 3 computer rooms and one storage room to raid. Better empty out the WRX for the commute.

For that matter, I can check our our racks, but I know for certain ours aren't 28" deep. Maybe 20-22" at the most. Thanks for your willingness to put in some legwork.

If you do end up using server rails for the drawers you can use this nifty logo:

HP 1U Proliant server rails are full length. I will have to get a measurement tomorrow. Full extension with locking clips built in.

I design Tele/data rooms as an architect. No expert on what is available but don't racks typically only run 18" deep with equipment reaching up to 30" in the large IBM/Dell/HP style tower racks. Not sure what size slides they use in those though....

Yes. Server rails are a much closer fit. 28" rings a bell.

Just to clarify, we're looking for rails that are 56" when extended. That seems really long for a server cab but it sounds like you guys work with better hardware than I do so hopefully you'll find something that works.

We use a lot of Dell PowerEdge 2950s and they are 29.5" with 28" rails. I read up on Dell's rail specs and they state a full 28" of travel due to their 3 rail-per-side construction. So 56" extended can be met by using these. Maybe this won't be something you end up going with for your product but it is shaking out to be a possible choice for the DIY crowd.

Sounds like it has potential. Any idea on the weight rating?

With the number of IT people we have in the 100 section, you should have a steady stream of materials.

Weight ratings are all over the place. I am looking into it but I don't think I am going to find any rated for 250 lbs. Where did you come up with the figure in the 1st place? I estimated 150 lbs to be adequate if I was ever going to build a set. Are you going for bombproof?

Also, are you wanting 250 lbs per rail or per pair?

Per pair. Keep in mind that they rating is based upon drawer cycles (which we'll never come close to approaching) and even weight distribution. It's the latter that will get us. Put 50 lbs at the front of the drawer and you're probably close to capacity. I was actually thinking that the 250 lbs class might be a little light. But I like to over-engineer.

Did y'all find anything promising with the server rails?

I would love a great system! I was all over this until I found out that ARB was going to import and distribute the ones from Australia as those just do it for me.

I can add some thoughts and details along with the best sliders and locks I had found. The latches I can get locally for $40 and the ones I would want.

Best,

Shane
