Just read a thread that refered to gaskets and sealants. What the heck is the story. The parts store has RTV, sealant, form-a-gasket, yadda, yadda.....

When DO you augment the gasket? I have a few bolts that have broken off and thought that it made sense to use forma gasket there, but how about the rest of the tine/ Timing covers, valve covers, etc.

Ia there any guide out there for this?

If you are working on something that has a poor sealing surface that a gasket alone may not be able to keep sealed, that is where I use any form of sealant....

Oil pan gasket in the corners, as specified in the FSM.

There are other places that I use it too, but typically, I try not to use it unless there is an irregularity in the sealing surface...

Cement... I use that to hold gaskets in place....glue them to the piece that can be removed if possible...helps making removal easier....

I use string to tie the pan gasket in four locations, and longer bolts to get the pan up there so that you can situate the gasket into the sealing notches in the main caps...

ramble, ramble, ramble....

sorry.

Good luck!

Don't use a non-hardening or silicone type sealant on surfaces that require a solid fit between two parts [like the front output housing of a transfer case to the main housing. ]

Also don't use anything silcone based to seal ANYTHING that has to do with the gasoline part of the truck [e.g. carburetor, manifolds, fuel line connectors. THe one exception to that would be on sealing the fuel pump to the block.

I use silicone on some hardware, like the water pump and thermostat bolts, and on the windshield hing bolts.
