Sorry if this has been ask before. Does your FJ40 got that gas smell when driving it? I would like to know how you get rid of it. I taped all the holes on the firewall, but I still smell gas when I drive. My FJ is a '78, so the gas tank is inside, but I noticed that the smell is also from the engine bay (probably from the carburator). Thanks for any suggestion.

The boot on my transfer case shifter wasn't sealed all the way. It blew hot engine air up into the cab until I figured it out. It wasn't bad and smelled more like exaust rather than gas.

Probably a leaking gas tank - I patched and replaced all kinds of stuff in my '76 before I finally pulled the tank and found gas seeping from the rust on the bottom. You might want to pull the shield off and make sure all the emissions lines are capped (assuming yours is like mine - emissions free), and check the fuel lines that come off the top of the tank and connect to the metal lines on the frame. If it smells like raw fuel - it's usually not coming from the engine (you'd better hope anyway!)

I have a small exhaust leak, and if I floor it, I will smell a little raw gas coming out of the exhaust leak, also check your tank, I had to replace my stock steel with a poly one from CCOT, pretty happy with it, it just has some sealing issues around the fuel sender which I will take care of with some rtv.

mine is doing that too. It could be you need new hoses for your gas tank and that your carburator needs to be adjusted. I know mine wasn't doing it until I messed with the timing. :-\

I already took the gas tank shield off and check. Everything looked fine. I noticed one thing though, when I filled up too full I can smell some gas. It wasn't that bad. I think it's probably those two or three lines that connect to that plastic thing.

The time I really get high is when driving. Not constantly, but only some time that I smell the gas. I think it's only when I play a little with the gas pedal. The carburator on mine is an after market. I don't have the metal housing - just the 4" filter.
