Gas tank: fix or replace?

I've seen tons of floats go like that.............still amazes me. Maybe the pineapple juice ate it?

I'll see what I have for extras Steve, pretty sure there was a good one in the '62, I just don't want to leave myself short. :D

LOL!! Yep, that stuf is pretty acidic and tough on gas tanks. But, thanks for checking round to see what you got. My next stop was going to be Bloomingdale's.

Steve, bad news, I'm down to one spare, can't give it up. :frown:

No problem, Jim . . . and thanks again for checking. ;)

So, anyone know what alternative sender/float will work, even if gauge swap is necessary?

Also, is the 5-hole gasket a standard size?

I have a 69 sender and I'm going to explore sticking the 69 gauge into the cluster. They;re both black, but I havent put them side by side to see if there is a difference. I also have an electrical guru here to see if we can figure out a way to have the old gauge work wth the new sender. Anyone know what the ohms range is on the old sender?

Mike

So, a later model sender should fit in the 25's tank size-wise (screw holes, gasket, etc.) and it would be just a matter of matching up some gauge ohmage. Right??

No idea what the ohm range is for a 25 gas gauge, short of access to a troubleshooting/spec chart in a 25 service manual. (Anybody??)

I guess a 12 volt source to the gauge with an in-line variable resistor (potentiometer) and VOM would show the "Empty" to "Full" needle deflection range . . . other than actually having a known good sender to measure.

I remember reading somewhere that the only difference was the ohm range.
Then it would just be a matter of matching that up with the appropriate resistors. Let me know how they match up otherwise if you get a chance to compare them.

Good news!! I cleaned up the old sending unit (mostly surface gunk and rust) to the point where it looks like it's working again. Turns out that the gasket underneath all that crud is still in great shape as well.

I ran a VOM check on it and got a variable reading of about 2.8 ohms for the full tank position and about 6.8 ohms for the empty position. (Don't quote me on those readings, as it's a cheapo VOM.)

Anyway, just a matter of tracking down a generic float to attach to the arm and I should be good to go.

well, I tried to fit my newer sender in the tank and no go. I'm not sure what I'll be doing now.. but I do have this nice restored purty tank

EDIT: I did clean up the old sender. The arm is still frozen so I'm letting it sit for a while with PB on it. I figured it was fubar already, it can't hurt :)

The arms are actually crimped on. The newer arm can be swapped onto the old sender. They are the same angle and everything. That'll solve your float dilemma.

Hmmm . . . good idea, Mike. The newer style float is kinda rectangle-shaped, right??

i have a 78 fj40 but i put the gas tank underneath from an older model, i have some missing parts and i can see two big holes on top, one at one side where the filling neck attaches and 4 small fittings maybe for venting and the one that goes to the carb, what are those big holes on top for? one is for the sender thats for sure but the other one? both have the same diameter

Thought I'd post a few pics of the lineup...the 25 tank, both soft and hardtop, measure 24" wide in the rear, 18 3/4 in the front...early and mid 40s measure about 29 1/4 wide in the rear, 22 1/4" in the front

25 tanks a narrower to make room for those cool tranny covers, maybe the poly tank has a different width than a stock 40, wouldn't hurt to check....

Do you have any fj25 gas tank?
