I am trying to identify the part that has a little gray plug on it, which is peeking from behind the green plug in the picture. I unplugged it while replacing valve cover gaskets, and it was like peanut brittle under there, so I want to replace it, but have no clue what it is. this is by the airbox, passenger side top of engine towards front, and it appears to screw in. thanks for any help.

Both of those (green and gray plugs) are coolant temperature sensors. One is for the gauge cluster and the other is for the ECU.

If you can find the 5 numbers, which are on all wire housing blocks. Add 90980-????? to get full P/N. I find cleaning, then taking pictures to zoom in very helpful.

I've learned the exact name of this sensor, which I've broken is "Gage Assy water temp sensor" and the part number is 83420-20040 (gray plug in picture; see beginning of thread)

after the fact, I found this related thread.

Just something I wanted to say about the2 wire sensor. My RPM Stayed high even after warming up the engine, guess what, that two wire sensor was shot. I installed my 92 Geo prizm /Toyota Corolla used sensor and it works as it should. There was a graph someone posted online and you can check the resistance with the temperature before calling it bad or not.

Thanks. Any idea what the torque specs are on those? I tried the online FSM, and after searching for 20 minutes I failed to find it. My guess is anywhere from 9-22 ft. lbs. based on what I found for other vehicle types..

Did you ever find the torque specs for the coolant temperature sensor?

If memory serves I believe either the sensor or the port is tapered so you just screw it in until it is tight. If it leaks you tighten it down a little more.

I don't think I did. I just eyeballed where the threads stopped, and used common sense not to make too tight.
