I have an '83 GX Sahara that was brought to the U.S. from Australia. These variants must have been a bit more Spartan in their early years. No LSD, no A/C, but it does have a high roof, third row seating, 5 speed manual, Sahara graphics down the side, and a unique looking steering wheel. It would be interesting to find out the first year that the GX was available, or the Sahara.

Excellent thread. I've been able to identify Mr Brown ( Jan'82 Aus HJ60) as having been - once - a deluxe G station wagon. Dash still looks pretty much like in this picture posted a couple of pages back by 'Joe_E', just a bit more battered. I put a tilt meter in where there seems to have been a cassette player. Front seats replaced with the bog standard vinyl ones. After years of various alloys, Sunraysias whatnot now back to the roots with split rims and 7.50 R16 Road Grippers. Tilt on steering wheel, 6 seats and A/C - lap of luxury!

Specification Levels
Identifying specification levels of the 60 Series Cruisers can be confusing as the designations changed in July
1987. Up until that point the specification levels were; Standard, Deluxe (G) and Sahara (GX). After July 1987
these became; Standard, Deluxe (GX) and Sahara (VX). In 1989 the GXL was added and sat between the GX
and the VX in the range.

White Lightning 1989
By the end of the 1980's the 60 series was struggling against the coil sprung Nissan GQ Patrol. The 80 series
Landcruiser was still 18 months away and in an effort to boost sales Toyota introduced the 'White Lightning'
model. It was available in 1989 only. There were only 150 made and each were numbered on a plaque on the
centre of the dash. As the name suggests the theme behind the model was that it was white. The White Lightning
was a GX model loaded with extra features including a number of white accessories which gave it very distinct
looks. It was available in both the FJ62 and HJ61 models and sat between the GXL and Sahara in the 60 series
stable.

Silver Series Models
There were two different Silver Series models, the SS60 and the lesser known SS150.

Silver Series SS60 1983
The limited edition 'Silver Series' was available in 1983 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Landcruiser in
Australia. It was the idea of Ian Glover, then editor of Overlander Magazine. The model was loaded with many
accessories that were available as options from Toyota dealers. It also had some Sahara accessories as well. As
the name suggests they were all silver in colour with distinctive pinstriping. There were only 500 made, but they
were not numbered. They were available as both FJ60 and HJ60. Main features included;

The 'Limited Edition Silver Series 150' was available from South Australian Toyota dealers only in 1986. There
were only 50 ever made and each vehicle had a separate ID plate with the build number out of 50 stamped on
it. The model was created to celebrate the Jubilee 150 - the celebration of 150 years of European Settlement in
South Australia. Evidently it was the Deluxe model, but had the Sahara interior.

In Europe like in Denmark you could get a standard roof HJ61 with GX spec and SOB doors. And cable lockers .
