@WanderinWhitlows .... "This thing is aerodynamic as a house."

You'll notice on page three of the owners manual where it talks about acceleration, it clearly states that 0-60 is "possible".

I reckon if I got my glass out the fine print will read "but not recommended."

I had originally thought to leave the PTO parts in but now I'm thinking that I need to trim some weight and I reckon that stuff can live under the bench in the shop until I decide what to do with it.

Today I'll get started on looking for taller gears for it as I plan to leave the 35's on it as I really enjoy being able to air them down to zero psi and know that I'm still safe on the Hutchinson wheels. @wardharris, do you have any offerings that can be added to that invoice? I ask as is like to only tear into the axle housings once.

As with most diesel Cruisers, the only potential for a speeding ticket exist within a school zone.

Your world will come to a change once you turbo. There's no
cheap way of doing it but dang does it ever change the drivability of the cruiser for the better ten fold

I'm really encouraged by this as I love driving this thing but the lack of acceleration leads to some sketchy situations getting onto the interstate.

Dang it - you are taking a perfectly good rig....and making it perfect-er!
What a great score and I love the fact that you are adding such excellent, high quality improvements. Budget's be damned - you can't take it with you, afterall!!

I'll be watching this thread closely. You are building a dream rig (of mine anyway!)

I saw this recently on a Honda Element and found a photo online.... Funny, but true....

Thank you, I'll never stop saying that the previous owner handed me an excellent example to tinker with. As to the upgrades I'm making, I've come to find that if you just take a knee and sort out what you want to accomplish and then strike out from there you will only have to "cry once" as my father used to say. With that said, I'm always open for suggestions.

After a grand tour sponsored by the United States Postal Service, the Rob Smith LED's arrived with no damage and I immediately got to installing them. The included installation instructions were spot on and even included pictures that even a dummy like me could follow. So grateful that I ordered these as they make an incredible difference. So incredible in fact that they illustrate how aged the twenty six year old clear lenses on the dome lights actually are. Add a pair of them to the "need to be ordered" list.

Finally got with @wardharris and ordered a pair of E-Lockers for the K082 axles. Still need to get new gears and with the decision to stay with the 35" tires I'm thinking at least 4.56 or maybe even 4.88 ratio. Completely open to suggestions here. There will be a bit of a wait for the lockers to arrive but that will give me time to do some more investigating into the suspension and decide what I want to upgrade other than the air shocks that the previous owner had installed, which I have already blown out.

More details and pictures to follow as any minute now I will have a house full of guests.

I'm sure your guest wouldn't mind if you excused yourself long enough to post some photos. :)

I had 4:88's on a Jeep with 35's. Seemed to be good....at least with that engine and trans combo.
Unless you are pushing some real hp, In Jeeps I always liked 4:10's for 31's. 4:56 for 33's and 4:88's for 35's.

Honestly it's going to be 5k plus to turbo it after gauges and an exhaust.

It may be better to buy a 1hdt, swap it in and sell your 1hz to offset it. It would be cheaper....

Why not a 1KZT/E?

I say that because there is a guy here selling his hilux surf for $1500. It's got a KZ but the hg is blown. It would involve a 12v conversion. But that may be easier in the long run? There are a few other things I want from the truck, but not the motor. I leave here from Ohio in a few months and can take a motor with me.

Friday is one of my dialysis days so I was pretty much wiped out already.

Running 4.56's on my 4.0L Tacoma with 35's and they seem to be the closest to the stock ratio that I could get using the gear calculator website.

Stick with stock gearing.
Transfer case gears would be a better call

Here in lies the problem, I've been offered a ridiculously good deal on an Atlas 4 case that I could make adapters for to mount into either the Tacoma or the Land Cruiser. And I can't make up my mind which one I will put it into at this point.

I would turbo charge it first and then see how you feel about the gearing.

Since I know the turbo retrofit will happen that does come across as solid and logical advice. But on the other hand, I'm putting a pair of lockers in and while I have the works apart it would make sense to add new gears at the same time. Decisions, decisions.

Honestly it's going to be 5k plus to turbo it after gauges and an exhaust.

I've waited a very long time for the 1HZ's to get to the States and this really is the engine I want to run with. May not seem logical to some for performance and budget reasons, but true love rarely makes sense.

It can be done for a lot less than 5k. Depending on what exhaust is on it now, it might be as easy as mating up the turbo exhaust flange to the current setup.
1HZ Diesel Turbo Kit Universal type kit w/ CT26 [1HZ Diesel Engine 1990 and newer] - $2,199.00 : CruiserParts.net, Toyota Landcruiser Parts

Add gauges and you'll really want 3" so factor that in. Pump will need a tune and you'll want your cooling system in top notch. Soon you'll want an intercooler too.

Foreal is right, these are not cheap to turbo. If i was to do it again I'd seriously be considering a 1HD-T

First of if that turbo blows in the kit will they warranty it. Its a brand I have never heard of.
Honestly a 1HZ sells for what 4k US. 1hd-t being similar.
If i was to do it again I would go 1hd-t or ft.. Not worth it for me now.

I certainly can't argue with the awesomeness of a 1HDT, but finding one in known condition and known mileage for 4K doesn't seem realistic.

The Turbo listed in that kit is a CT26, same Turbo Toyota uses on the 1hdt if I am not mistaken. I believe that kit is made up from mostly genuine Toyota parts.
