3rd gen 4runner shifter

Yeah x2 on that if it is a straight swapp!

I have a 1986 Auto Trans 4 cylinder 4wd Toyota truck for parts. I took the shifter handle out today for a test fit into the 80. In park it hits the dash. I am a short s*** at 5'1, so I don't think I'll have the problem of bumping OD off, but my FZJ80 handle's leather is FUBAR, that is why I was doing the test fit. I don't think the button would have worked either, there are differences there. Just a heads up to keep people from wasting their time with that option.

Thanks for this FYI green73...you saved me the trouble! :)

Well I tore into it yesterday and the only way to flip it around is to take part #057 and cut that little bracket off the bottom and re-weld it to the other side.

Hopefully I can do that tonight. I don't have a welder so I have to take it over to Flanks house to git r dun! Pics to come....

Okay finally got it done and here are the pics and how to info...

It's very easy to take off the center console, only 4 little screws hold the center console on and then it just lifts off.

Then take the 4 screws out of part #046 and lift it up so that you can get to the nut that holds part #057 (17mm nut) (The little bulb that lights up the shifter console just twist off from the bottom side).

Then cut the 2 wires that go to the OD button in a place that will be easy to splice back to gether.

Unscrew the 2 screws on the back side of the shifter handle and pull it off (make sure you hold the button b/c there is a spring in it). Pull the wire thru.

You can drive the shift lock pin (part #064) out with a hammer and then the shaft should look like this.

Then pull part #'s 053, 054, 418 & 056 they should all come out together!

Then cut off the tab at the bottom like this.

Clean it up, line everything back up [EDIT] Before you re-weld the little lever piece on the other side of the shift lever, make sure that you compensate for the offset in that little lever piece.. And make sure your shift pin will line back up with the shift positions...P R D 2 L...like it did before!![EDIT]...and then weld it to the other side. Put part #'s 053, 054, 418 & 056 back in and drive the lock pin (part #064) back into place. Now bolt it back on and it should look like this.

Splice the wires back and then finish putting everything back together and SNAP! Your done!!!:hillbilly:

AWSOME!!!! thanks for doing this...I will get on this soon...it drives me crazy on long trips...:beer::beer:

Well you know what they say "necessity is the mother of invention"!:hillbilly:

I couldn't take it anymore, I had to do something even if it was wrong!!!:bang:

I understand the frustration - but I couldn't get used to using my pinky to activate the shifter, especially when rocking it out of a stuck

You don't have to use your pinky finger...the third finger works great! Or you can use the middle finger:flipoff2:!

Come on...you had to see that coming!:D

Roy,

Thanks for painting the shifter before showing the welds. Looks good, glad to help.

Flank.
