This one is a doozie. Once in a while my truck turns the heat on by itself. I can have it be set on full cold with AC, but it would shift to full hot. To correct this I would have to move the slider to hot and back to cold.

Any ideas before start digging in it?

I just posted under another thread on this, but it's an easy thing to check to see if the Heater Control Valve cable sheath isn't captured by the clamp properly. If its arranged as shown in this pic, the outer cable sheath can slide around with vibration and possibly allow the Heater Control Valve to open.

You mention that cycling the Hot->Cold slider corrects it, which I'm speculating may move the cable back into a position that prevents hot coolant from circulating, at least for awhile. Take a look at the other thread, which is likely more info than you need: Adjusting water valve to maximize A/C performance - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/adjusting-water-valve-to-maximize-a-c-performance.173731/

Are you sure it goes to full hot? In my mind that means air is coming out of the vents close to 200f. If the AC just stops cooling and you flip back to ambient you may have an issue within the AC system versus the heating system.

I had a similar problem and it turneed out to be the "temperature control switch". This is the slider at the bottom of the control panel.
I ended up cleaning the internals with electrical contact cleaner and blowing gently with compressed air.
Another item mentioned is the system temperature sensor/thermocouple. It is behind the 4 little slots to the left of the slider. The system gently pulls air into the sensor through a hose the check the cabin temperature. Some have knocked off the hose behinid that (maybe while installing a new head unit).

Some peopl have toggled the "AUTO" function and had success.

Older thread with some other things to check.

Others have found water damage/corrosion on the "AC Amplifier"
