Any of you upgrade your alternator? I want to replace mine before the Moab trip, I want a bolt in in case it ever fails on the road. I have seen the thread on mud.

I am looking at this? 220A High Output Alternator for 1993 - 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 4.5L L6 | PowerBastards.com | PowerBastards.com - https://www.powerbastards.com/proddetail.asp?prod=13497-220-HD1-2

I see other Toyota ones work too. Any thoughts?
Sorry can't help here. When I had an 80 I had thought about it but never got around to doing anything with it.

I was looking a while ago and apparently this one will also work, just requires some grinding

I have seen that thread. I am on the fence. Still one one that I can bolt a stock one back in without needing to add anyting back.

Buy 2 for the cost of that one and you’ll have a spare.

I’m probably going to go this route. I need a bigger alternator for the capacity to charge up my fridge battery. I got a cool charger that can combine 500w from alternator and 500w of solar (if I ever go that route) to provide 1000w of charge through a solar cable. Pretty cool

I spent a long time looking at the upgrade options but ended up putting a new denso OEM in. I kept my old and will rebuild it as a spare for the trip.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing how yours works out though. Ice run my winch plenty of times and haven't had any trouble. I got a throttle lock and rev the rpms at about 2k when I run it, but I'm sure that little alternator isn't up to the task.

Which way are you going @matzell ?
Not sure. You know me, I do not have a lot of extras on the truck. Leaning towards a Toyota reman. Mine is fine, but may replace it before driving to Moab in April.

Just saw this.

I’ve rebuilt my alternator and haven’t had an issue with it since but if I do upgrade it, the photoman mod from deltavs will be the way to go.

LS is also always the better option though. 😎

Hi, which Denso alternator did you put in please? I can’t seem to find a 80A one that fits without modifying the bracket. Thanks

I got the denso reman 80A from Rick auto. It fit fine without any trouble and looked exactly like the OEM I pulled out.

FWIW: the alternator started giving me wild voltage numbers from 12.6 to 15.5v somewhere in Arkansas while driving across the country. Of course I never did find the time to rebuild the OEM like I had planned so I figured it was karma for being lazy. I ended up buying a Chinese reman from AutoZone and kept it in the truck just in case but I never had to use it. Its happened a few more times but hasn't crapped out yet. My assumption is the voltage regulator is bad. I bought a real Toyota reman alt when I got home and I'm going to put that one in and return the AutoZone one.

I bought an new reman unit from Toyota as well. Mine is still working, but wanted it thinking I was going to drive across country. I will swap it out, next time I am in there or wait till it actually starts to fail. My current one is a aftermarket that came with the truck, but working.
