Fusible Link Question???

Scottcb,

I doubt it, but isolate it and test it when you get the replacement FL installed.

I happen to also own an '85 JF60. I went out and looked under the hood at the place you were describing. On my truck, where the wires for the carb solenoid split from the loom, there are three wires: 2 are for the solenoid and a third that is not used. My truck is like yours, on the third wire there is no connector and the wire is cut short and hanging.

scottcb,

I had a FL problem on another truck that needed a repair. I did not have another piece of fuse wire or a new Toyota link.

So I repaired the broken one! Here's some steps and photos to demonstrate the process.

I pried the weather packing out of the back of the connector plugs and released the terminals of both connectors. I then used my fingers to locate the broken area. I carefully trimmed away the unneeded insulation and exposed a portion of link conducor.

I checked to make sure I had conductivity on the remaining fuse link, then I pried open the connector to release as much of the trapped wire as possible. I tinned both the top of the connector and the end of the conductor. After tinning the two pieces I soldered them together.

Thanks for the step by step, I'll be fixing it shortly. My local dealership called and said they found the FL and got it shipped for me. I installed it and as expected still havethe same problem.

I removed the new FL and replaced it with the old one. The funny thing is I tried cranking the motor and the starter kicked in and triend to turn over. It never turned over. I opened the Dist. cap and the rotor looks worn out. It spins when I try to turn it over, just not giving power to the spark plugs. So I'll replace the rotor and cap, they are still original from 85. At the same time the ignition coil is pretty worn so I'll replace that while I'm at it. Hopefully I'll get it to start.

As far as the electrical problem, I'm at a loss and will continue to chase it down. I know the problem is beyond the blown FL (the red one). A couple of people have recommended a local guy who is supposed to be great with older electrical systems. I may resort to that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the help.

.... I found a single loose wire hanging down, going nowhere...... any ideas what it leads to?

Judging from location in your pics, that might be the wire that runs to the sensor on the back of your exhaust manifold. It's supposed to tell the carb fan to run when you shut down and things are still hot. Not sure that would cause your short though.

Later,
Butt
