So I've been reading the SeaKnights thread and I'm inspired to take some 'just go toodling" day trips... for now it's going to be pull her with the tundra then go riding around. at least till I get some electrical issues ironed out (seems like this is the default state)
or trip well within an hour of home.

So What I'd like to here are suggestions fun places, especially taking back roads, to take the cruiser for rides.

I'd like to end up in places with scenery and dirt road trails, but I'm not looking for hard offroadin.. just fun places to go.

Hopefully after I get more bugs worked out i can take the wife and kiddos along for good family time.

Here is what i have... mostly good drives to the destination
Inks Lake state park
Canyon lake park
Walburg for german food
The back side of manor east of 130 (god it's beautiful down there)
I have not been yet but hidden fals sounds nice, and sorta close.

Any recommendations... just looking for good time and scenery, maybe cool destinations to swim or something.

Greatly appreciated

If you like caves, there is a few around here.

A couple of suggestions:

Buy a Texas Atlas which shows all the farm and ranch roads that don't appear on most maps. They're widely available. I've even seen them at Wal-Mart. Texas Road Atlas

For starters, find your way out of South Austin and proceed south/west on 290 West. Depart 290 on Texas 165 outside Henly and wind your way through the Hill Country to Blanco. If you go on Friday afternoon, stop by Real Ale Brewing for free tasting of their excellent craft beers. Then into town for chow at the great Red Bud Cafe.

One of the best local drives you'll find in Central Texas is Devil's Backbone on RM 32, between Blanco and Wimberly. Google it for more info. It's the perfect road for slow driving in an old 40.

"One of Texas most scenic drives, officially R.M. 32, the "Devil's
Backbone" is a winding, razor-backed ridge overlooking Hill Country vistas. Extends from R.R. 12 just south of Wimberley, west some 24 miles to near Blanco."

Another great drive begins in Kerrville and proceeds west on Texas 39. This is a winding two lane road that follows the curves of the Pedernales River toward Hunt. You can turn off 39 onto FM 187 and check out Lost Maples natural area. It's spectacular, particularly in the Fall.

That should get you started. There's no shortage of scenic country roads around here, once you fight your way out of Austin. Take pictures. We'll expect a full report.

Chart a route to Garner State Park using the back roads. I've done it once and was amazed at the scenery. You can then take the back roads to Lost Maples State Park.

I agree with Dave... Done this trip 3-4 times on the way back from Garner, stopped by Lost Maples, etc. Really nice scenery.

I need to try Lee's suggestions.

Luis, you'll like the Devil's Backbone loop. It's spectacular.

My guiding principle on these drives is avoiding people and avoiding traffic. That's pretty easy to do in the hill country south of Austin, as long as you stick to farm and ranch roads. An atlas is really helpful. Otherwise you'll miss a lot of the good stuff.

1.Enchanted rock.

2. I like this route, though super windy at points. Fun in a slow cruiser, or in a sports car.
Its a MUST.
290 west, left on 165 (amazing views). This runs into 163. Take a left. There is a meat processor, there so stop and buy jerky. CASH only. In a few blocks you are on 281. Go south west on 281, and take a right on 473. 473 turns into 27 as you go through comfort, an that will take you on into kerrville and to kerrville lake.

Yeah the devils back bone is Great i used to live off John Knox road and took the backbone to and from SWT every day...
that's how i was planning to drive down to Canyon...

The rest sound great!

man that would be cool ... for now a day trip to Hidden falls would be the easyest since its not Hwy ready ... but either way let me know once the BJ is back up I'd love to do a back road trip

South of blanco, just west of canyon lake/281
Turn onto CR 101 then to 473 to Comfort

About six low creek crossings and a lil curvy,,,old barns and ranches

.....

What better Day Trip than a visit to Jordan Ford for a test drive in a Taco then escape the clutches of the vultures...:steer: Did they ever quit buggn' you? ...Give me a 100 bux or I will tell them where you live plus give up your email addy...:D
