The outer steel layer around my stock fuel tank has rotted away, and now the tank itself is beginning to get some surface rust. Before I paint it, I'd like to find something to protect it. I can fab or have fabbed a box to strap under it, but are there any stock or aftermarket products to protect the fuel tank from hazards? It's an '03, bone stock, relentlessly being modified by Michigan road salt.

I'm in the same camp - let me know if you find anything out there.

why not just buy another OEM skid plate and coat it with lots of rust proofing?

If the OEM skidplate is available that would be the nicest solution for me. I could probably throw it in with the next batch of steel parts we send out for galvanizing, and I'd be all set.

I can't find anything about dropping the tank in my '04 FSM, looks easy enough with four pins, but a drawing might tell me if the skidplate is part of the tank. I'm not sure if it can be ordered separately, guess I'll check with cDan. If an aftermarket solution is available, I'd like to know what it looks like and costs before I bug cDan.

I'm in the same boat.

I asked about this several months ago and the same thing happened. Half a dozen people said they were interested but nothing is available. It's a fairly well protected area but my OEM tank "protection" is fairly bashed in. A light weight Al option would be idea and I would think would sell well, especially since there is no competition. Slee, consider this a request!

Aluminum would be nice, but I have sheets of high-density polyethylene that would take a hit better.

Sam Stewart - Does Mr. T sell this part separately?

Best I can tell from the catalog, it comes separately on the 98-02, 03+ is part of the tank?

Is it attached to the tank somehow? It looks like the 98-02 just sits under the tank and is held on by the straps.

Thanks Sam. Do you have a part number and list price?

I have asked about this too in the past and no one had an answer.
My question was: If you undo the straps to remove the guard does the fuel tank come down with the guard or is the tank held up separately? Anyone know?

Thanks!

Thanks, nice illustrations there. I think my truck is 2002/08, so wondered which one mine would be, but they both show the same part number for the skid plate.

2002/08 is the build date... So pretty much 2003+ model year. Looks like it is the same part but actually the superseded PN is 77606-60120 for 98-05. Didn't check 06-07.

I'm curious how your skid plate has held up? Im actually replacing my tank and skid plate soon and will likely coat them both.

I think scottm did a whole write up with pics about how he removed his skid plate using ratchet straps to hold up the tank while he removed the skid plate to refinish it. Apparently the steel straps that hold the skid plate are the same ones that hold the tank up.

Anyone ever start making a proper skid plate for the tank?

The 2016 VOT was not kind to the underside of my Hundy!
