Morning All,

I messaged Jim (Downey Off-Road) last week and he said that his 22 gallon fuel cell is no longer available. I can't find anyone making one similar. Am I missing something? I won't be running a tank inside because I plan to build under seat storage drawers. Otherwise, the long range tank that goes under both seats would work. Also, the price on those...Holy Crap!

I do have an old, used Con-Ferr tank in storage somewhere that came with a bunch of spare parts that I bought 20 years ago. I have no idea what shape it's in. I figure that if someone removed it, it's probably not in great shape. 20 years of storage probably hasn't helped.

Any help/guidance would be much appreciated.

I was doing some digging on this topic recently and found an interesting thread about using a Chevy S-10 gas tank. Not sure if this is something you'd consider but it's worth a look:

Yeah, I've seen that but it wouldn't be my first choice. I really like the Downey/Con-Ferr tanks. That said, it may come to this or something like this if I can't find something better.

My 72's aux tank was from a 12.5 gallon Datsun B210 tank. I used 2 steel 2" banding straps and a 2" seat belt strap to hold it in place behind the rear axle. I bought an assortment of Low value 2% resistors from radio shack. Trial and error I got the fuel gauge to read from E and in empty to 1/2 which was full. My manual tank selector is under the bench seat where I can easily reach it. I have a switch on the dash so I can select which tank the gas gauge reads. It was very nice for a long time to have 30 gallons in tanks, no 5 gallons cans for me. Plus both tanks fill on the passenger side. I put it in about 1985 and removed it last year.

That tank is out and needs repaired or replaced. I think I'm going to weld up a new tank that holds move and fits in the space better.

My OEM main tank started to weap in a seam 1984. I did the alcohol proof tank liner from JC Whitney. It has never leaked since.

There is some red liner stuff that doesn't appear to work. Do your home work.

I have one of these on my '75 that developed a serious leak this winter. Gonna' pull it soon and get it repaired.

You should reconsider using yours.

I really wanted to use one of the Downey Nylon ones. I might be out of luck though.

I've removed four auxiliary tanks over the years. Only one crudely built tank would I worry about ever using. Empty and allow to vent and stored inside can't see rust being an issue in LA.

Had a friend who installed Man A Fre under the seat low range tank. He complained about the lack of baffles and gas sloshing around.

You can put a "wanted ad" in the classified section or maybe search it. You might contact Marks off road, I seem to recall he was selling one in the past.

Here is an option, for sale from well known member/seller @pardion . 11 gallons isn't likely enough for it to be used as primary tank, but would be a great aux tank size and stay tucked up nice & tight.

I had a new in box poly Downey tank I sold to member @avicenna110 a couple years back, maybe he didn't end up needing it/installing it and wants to sell?

I didn't realize Mark was still in business. As I remember, he's not too far from me and had just about everything. I'll give him a call.

I am still here. The best kept secret in the Landcruiser world!😛

I don’t have any more auxiliary tanks, new or used. GLWS

GLWS? It's good to hear that you're still in business. I met you at your shop a few times many years ago chasing parts for this very 40. I'll check with you for availability before I buy parts elsewhere as the project continues. I'd much rather support a local business than a faceless website.

I’d recommend using the old conferr tank if you’ve already got it. It’s already made for that application so you know it fits and works. Those tank were pretty thick so I’d be surprised if it had any problems, more likely it was removed for some other reason and the PO just never felt the need to reinstall it.

Aero tanks in the inland empire also makes auxiliary tanks for the FJ40. I bought one for a different vehicle and it seems ok. Won’t win any craftsmanship awards but it looks functional.
