Recently i had been reading around to try and find some info on how long the fuel pumps in the 80's were expected to last. The only solid info i came across was something mentioning how it was a good idea to replace the pump maybe every 100k miles.

Well....needless to say the other day i got all the stuff ordered to swap out the pump seeing as i have several long distance trips coming up and my original pump is now at 268,000 miles:eek:

When ordering the pump i got all the necc. bits and also got the entire bracket so i could simply swap over the gauge parts from the old assembly. Right after i took these few shots i realized the nearly 12 yr old bolts were not budging and were only philips head so i didnt want to screw them up. I just swapped out the pump and prefilter and put it all back together.

Very easy and to no surprise, the truck drives and feels exactly the same. But its one more thing off the list.

Why not replace with Turbo Supra Fuel pump? Part# 23221-46110 ;)

Do you mean a Twin Turbo Pump?
There are about 2 people i know of that run Supra fuel pumps, and thats because they have turbos!

I never read anything about it anywhere, it did cross my mind, but didnt see a reason why i needed it.

Man what a waste of time and money. The fuel pump on my original, bought new 77 celica is still going strong, my sister's 80 with 205k miles is fine (which runs better than my '97) and my old '94 4runner with 250k miles never had a fuel pump issue oh and my '86 truck with 340k miles is still on the original pump and runs strong and still gets 18 mpg.

I think it's ok. Even worth it just to see the condition. This is the part that stranded Norcal Doug out in Death Valley.

Are you kidding me? Do you read have the crap we do on here that if a therapist could see, we would all be diagnosed with OCD so fast your head would spin. At least I don't close the door three times just to make sure the light will go off when I close it for the final time.

Did you forget your smilely? ;)

:D

Great PM Cruiserhead05! Thanks for the pictures. Post back with any mileage changes...

I realize the original pump was still in good working order but I've been stranded once with a PHH blowing in the middle of no where. I had to get a 100 miles tow to the closest Toyota dealership and have them fix it cause i didnt have the tools to do it on the side of the road.

Much like doug's ordeal, i figured it couldnt hurt and was something i would kick myslef in the but for, if it left me stranded.

Cruiserhead05 do you remember whats the part number on the fuel pump? I assume you have the 1FZ same as mine.

Jerry,

The part number for my 94 1fz fuel pump is 23221-46060.

I assume yours would be the same.

good pm. I just replaced my pump with a walbro 255 unit. (for me turbo) Its cool you replaced the assembly and pump but for those who want to save money you can get get new aftermarket pumps for cheap (<$100) on ebay. Walbro pumps are known for their reliability and performance. It isn't needed to replace the assembly. I didn't even replace the rubber gasket sealing the assembly cover to the tank--just make sure the tank pressurizes itself-you can test this be removing the the gas cap after driving in the heat-if you get a whhooosh you know the gasket is sealed.

For those of you who have full length drawer systems, this should be a good reminder to leave an access hole/port. Build your system with this access in mind! Otherwise, you'd have to take all of your crap out of the vehicle (like Doug's) in order to access the pump!

Good job dude.

Well that would totally suck, but I agree that it definently is in the OCD for alot of us. I've droped the tanks on my celica and truck more than once and every time I take a look at the pump. However the pump should never go bad, unless you frequently run the tank down to the fuel light/dry. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel so if the level is below the pump it can heat up and burn out. Otherwise you should get 20+ year and 300k+ miles.

Oh and I did mean my first response in a light hearted manner I just didn't put any simlies in since I did a quick reply and it was 2am.
