Fuel Pump price EDIT: And Install

I'm at the in-laws for the week and the fuel pump just died on my 62. the local dealership quoted me $290 for just the pump. Does that sound right? My father in law bought his last 14 vehicles from this place so I trust them, but I wasn't thinking it would be that much.

one more thing...I though about calling Cdan, but because I'm in a huge hurry and my father in law has such a good relationship with these guys I went there first.

Yes they cost that much, I am surprised that toyota was that cheap. Aftermarket runs between $100 and $400. I replaced my dead pump with a carter pump that my parts supplier gave me on the cheap, Sadly that pump was replaced under warranty 6 months later, no problems since. Just recently I bought a Japanese made pump from Specter Off Road for about $120, this is my spare.

If you are in a hurry go to a local parts house and check prices, one word of caution cheaper pumps usually don't include a new filter.

Have fun with the install, thank god Toyota installed a drain plug

Are you sure it's the pump? Check the wires in the driver's side wheel well in the rear if you haven't already.

There is a simple check in the Factory Service manual. Jumping two of the terminals in the check connector will run the fuel pump. use a jumper wire to connect terminal +B to FP with the ignition On. No sound in the tank, bad pump. If you hear a running pump look elsewhere. This is how I found the bad pump in mine.

Thanks for the help. I ran the jumper wire test. Here's the problem. I heard the pump but still wasn't getting fuel. I had the line cracked right before the fuel filter and nothing would come out when I ran the pump. I tried blowing the line with a little air but that didn't do anything.

Only other thing I can think is the pump is cloggeg or running but not pumping. Since I'm going to have to drop the tank to check, I wanted to have the new pump on hand either way.

One reason I think it's the fuel pump also is the PO mentioned it was on the way out, and even gave me the fuel pump bracket he had already ordered

Are you sure it's fuel? Check spark to confirm that it's your fuel pump. You can do this by using a test light and seeing if juice is getting to the coil, ignitor, and distributor. After you confirm it's not spark move back to your current truouble shooting. Here's my thread where I went through the same situation. Good luck. Ask more questions and we'll solve it. Waay too many people have delt with this for you to do any guessing.

I've got spark. I tested by detaching a plug wire and and then holding it near a bolt and watching it spark while my dad cranked it for a sec.

The engine was running perfect for the last month since I got it. The day before the pump died it started to idle a little rough in gear but would run well in neutral but at a higher rpm than normal.

I read a thread about the fuel pressure regulator on the return line causing a lot of the same symptoms. I pulled that line off and it was bone dry.

Ok, let's assume all you electronics are running correctly (EFI Relay, Circuit Opening Relay, and ECU.) That leaves the fuel system which you are now dealing with (Fuel filter, Fuel pressure Regulator, and Fuel pump.)

Your pump is running, that is a agood sign. It doesn't mean it's running at full pressure and correctly but i wouldn't replace that first. Someone with more knowledge on the FPR needs to chime in, especially since you're saying the line was dry.

ok... I just pulled the efi relay and tested it per the fsm...I get no continuity across the 2/4 like normal. But the 1/3 were I should get continuity I don't get a tone...I'm using a very precise ohm meter and the resistance measures at 75 ohms which I would think is low enough, but it won't cause a tone to sound on the actual continuity setting...

either way...the wire shunt still runs the pump, but again no fuel comes out of the line before the fuel filter...so it is probably a compound problem... is there an episode of "house" where the diagnose this..haha

I'm looking at it this way:
You're away from home.
You've done the usual checks and things are pointing to an in-tank issue as one explanation.

Can you afford the pump? If so, drop the tank and put it in.

Be sure to put in a new filter or 'sock' what ever Toyota calls it. Check for rust or debris in the tank while you've got it out and opened up.

That's kinda what I was thinking...I can afford the pump and it will be here tomorrow. my father-in-laws shop is incredible so it couldn't have happened at a better place to work....a fours stall garage with radiant floors and one of just about every tool known to man.
I've got the sock on order as well...

When I pulled the access panel and took out the fuel float the inside of the tank looks new. I've been using heet fuel line anti-freeze since I bought the truck, but I can't imagine that cause any problems. Maybe there is some crud some where on the pump that I can't see.

I've got the spare tire cross member off already and will drop the tank as soon an I get out and get some fuel cans to empty the tank...of course it was completely full so I've got 20+ gallons to deal with.

I'll keep you posted

I am going to drop my two cents here: Check to see if the fuel tank recall by Toyota included your truck and check to see if the recall work was done. If your truck was covered and the work wasn't done, your life will become much simpler.

Ooooooh! Good call!

What's the quick way to do that?

Give me 60 bucks and I will ship you a year old pump and the pickup, sock ..everything including the float.:grinpimp:
Where were you 12 hours ago before I dropped $300?!?!

To late now.
