I am trying to piece back together a 1972 FJ40 that I didn’t take a part and this is the first FJ I have every worked on. The ID tag says December 71 but it was tagged as a 72. I could really use some detailed pictures of where all the fuel lines, canister lines, return lines, etc. route to. I have searched the forum and found some posts that have really helped but I still am missing information. Can anyone provide more detailed pictures or is there a manual I can purchase that will illustrate what I need. Some pics of under a FJ showing how the hard lines run would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don’t have a ‘72, or any familiarity with it.

On my ‘78:

  • The tank is under the passenger seat. The tank has three ports that connect to the evaporator
  • The evaporator or separator is behind the pillar, next to the tank. The other evaporator port has a line that runs thru the floor and to the charcoal cannister, under the hood, on the passenger side, near the heater blower.
  • The drives side of the gas tank has a feed port and a return port.
  • A soft line runs from the tank feed port thru the floor and connect to a hard line that runs, thru the OS frame rail, to the fuel filter, near the battery. The line from the fuel filter to the fuel pump is a soft line. A hard line runs from the fuel pump, up and around the front if the valve cover, to the carb.
  • A soft line runs from the tank return port, thru the floor and connects to a hard line that runs to the front, in the PS frame rail... a hard line follows the feed hard line, to the carb. The return line may connect to a third port in your fuel pump or bypass the fuel pump.
Hope this helps a bit.

@Kansasminers
This tip probably won’t help with your routing question.

I often use the microfiche coolerman has posted on his website. The exploded diagrams come in handy. I have it saved on my iPhone in the iBooks app so I can view it offline.

Here’s the microfiche:

Here’s his schematics: Coolerman's Electrical Schematic and FSM File Retrieval
Thank you!
