Good morning,

Have any of you kept any record of the fuel economy you are getting from your Japanese BJ74 3.4 lt turbo diesel? How about the maximum distance you have travelled on a 90 litre tank?

I have heard of 800 kms from a tank. But that's only about 25 miles to the imperial gallon or about 21 mpg to the US gallon.

25 mpg sounds a bit low. I get 21 mpg combined from my 99 4Runner.

Comments?

Thanks,

Bruce in Tsawwassen

A lot of factors will affect that reading, mostly from tire size, gearing, and driving style. I'm getting 23 US MPG from mine during mixed city/hwy driving, and have gotten as low as 20 US MPG with a heavy foot. Keep in mind that I usually travell at 120+ kph on the freeway, and usually 10 above the speed limit in the city. My reading is corrected for 14% difference from running a 33.3" tire as compared to a 29" factory tire (speedo will be off).

255/85r/16 tires, 4:11 axle ratio, H55f.

No, the fuel consumption is not great, but I'm hoping a little bit of improvement with adjusting my fuel pump timing and injector service in the near future. Then again, it's a 5,000 lb+ Cruiser, and if I wanted a fuel efficient commuter I would have bought a new Echo or Golf TDI. :D

Thanks Stone,

That's about 28 mpg imperial. Not bad. I'll bet some of your modifications have negatively affected your fuel economy.

Sounds like you are getting close to 900 km per 90 litre tank.

Yes, you are right about the Jetta thing. BUT.... :) we like to have our cake & eat it too. And in terms of investment... higher fuel prices will drive up the cost of operation and drive down the selling prices of gas guzzlers. The BJ74 is a heavy duty 4X4 that gets close to 30 mpg (imperial) and will retain its value.

And those fuel prices are not going to go down. Do we really want to own an Escape Hybrid? NOOO! :)

You can't compare a 4Runner to a diesel cruiser. Apples and oranges. Compare a gas-powered 70 series with a diesel version. I'll bet some of our Aussie friends can fill us in with mileage they get with gassers.

Hi , I get around 600 km per tank. city driving, with 31x10.5 tires with an automatic. If i get on the highway my milage gets much better. oh ya, my LF caliper is stick too

If you have a larger tire size, it takes fewer revolutions to cover a given distance or (on the other hand), a given RPM sees you covering a greater distance. However, the distance that you cover is NOT the same as the distance that your odometer shows. It's simple geometry that tells you the circumference of a given circle.

Also, turning larger meats is more difficult; therefore, it burns more fuel to accelerate. You can always change out the ring gear in your diffs and match up things so that larger tires are not a detriment.
