the flat spots on the birf is so the birf will come out of the ball on the end of the axle/knuckle.

The inner axle is held in place by the clips that secure the axle to the birf (one inner/one outer). This keeps the axle from going into the birf to far and keeps the axle from going into the diff to far.

That's why when you pull out the birf the axle comes with it. some people omit the inner clip on the birfield and "Martack" the axle to keep it from going too far into the diff and makes it easier to seperate the axle and birf on the trail.
