1993 FZJ80, owned for less than a year. When I bought this Crusier the left hand front coil spring was broken. Still drivable, and both sides were a little over an inch from the bump stops. I bought a new spring from Toyota just wishing to keep everything stock. After installing the new spring both sides are on the bump stops. WTF?

The spring I bought was 48131-6a570 and had a bit of plastic at the end.

Pictures.... And pictures of the 'broken spring'...

cheers,
george.

New spring

This one is interesting to me as well. Why are you on bump stops with brand new springs. If the front end of your 80 is totally stock with no bumpers or winch, then you shouldn't be on bump stops! Can you tell us what are the paint color on your spring?

A few questions that come to my mind:
  • what's your center hub/wheel to bottom of fender flare measurement on the new springs?
  • are the old springs cut or broken?
  • is that upper bump stop a little taller than normal or is it stock/standard height?
One possible scenario is that the old springs were much taller and came with taller bump stops as well then someone cut those springs to lower them but left the taller bump stops in place. That's a guess but would at least explain what you are seeing.

Another scenario is that the new springs are wrong and are too short and/or too weak to hold the 80 up.

If your hub center to flare bottom measurement is around 21" thus indicating stock height then it seems like your bump stops may be the problem. If your hub-flare measurement is a lot lower then the springs are too weak or short provided there aren't issues we can't see in the photos, like an elephant sitting on the hood ;)

Thanks for the reply. No elephant, or winch, there is a brush guard but it’s pretty light duty. Everything seems stock to me. I took more photos and measurements from center of hub to bottom of fender.

Front right (new spring):18.25inches
Front left (old spring): 18.5 inches
Right rear 19.25 inches
Left rear 21 inches

As I said before, both front sides were ~1.5inches from bump stops before I replaced the left, and only left front spring. It was noticeably lower in the front however. Now right side is touching bump stop and left is very close(maybe <1/4 inch of air)

I only replaced the left side, but I believe I used a right side spring judging by the part numbers you posted.

I installed 48131-6A570 sourced from a Toyota dealer.

So, let's be clear here...

The LEFT side of the vehicle is the US driver's side. i.e. left and right are based on the view when you are sitting in the vehicle, NOT when you are looking at the vehicle from its front.

Anyhow, 18.5 is about 2" lower that a stock non-lifted 80. The US driver's side (LEFT) has a taller spring than the US passenger side (due to weight differences in the vehicle).

I'd be checking that you have the right coils and installed on the correct sides. Also, I'd be checking that everything is structurally sound where the coils are mounted, there seems to be quite a bit of corrosion and other nasty stuff going on. All that 'stuff' needs a good clean and some decent pictures from a bit of distance from the 'bits' and from different angles. Jack up each side (under the axle), remove wheel and take pics.

cheers,
george.

The suspension thread sticky has info as to which spring color code goes on which side. Also, replace them all; if one broke, the rest aren't far behind. Probably cheaper to get a set of Dobbies or OMEs than OEM, too.

His shocks are also in need of replacement!

I wonder given the cost if the OP would benefit from the lowest lift in the aftermarket? A complete shock/spring package for maybe less coin than all OEM parts?
