So fuel economy wise how does this Cooper compare? My first tiny cruiser look would be the 2001-2003 VW TDI. Two passed us on this last trip into the interior effortlessly passing in the snow sludge at speed. And I reckon for a lot less in fuel!! Understatement of the year

I drove to Cowichan and back yesterday (for annual smorgasbord with my Danish family). Fuel gauge dropped 1/8th for the round trip from Victoria. Not sure what that really amounts to, but seems pretty reasonable. Specs indicate 10.7l/100km city and 8.1l/100km highway. Meh, it's a fun drive. I'm not as caught up with mpg these days as I used to be.

Cummins comparison is a decent one, although I'm not really sure what commuter to get. We have the electric car for running around, but we want something Dino powered to get up north and for longer trips. Wife's c30 is starting to show its age and need more and more work.

The typical Swedish car is a v70, good towing capacity (by Swedish rules) and generally reliable... Although I sort of prefer the passat... Devil you know?

Its funny, my giant old cruiser crapwagon is pretty much bang on 10L/100km, if I got a vehicle that got 5L/100kms, it'd maybe save me a thousand bucks a year in fuel. Not really worth it.

I just want something different. If I wasn't eternally house poor, there's a Karman Ghia with a porsche engine that'd be fun as hell.

I keep eyeballing wrx's but, speaking of maintenance

Heya Steve, it's all yours! Would be great to catch up for sure. If you're able to stop by, that's easiest. But a meet at pub is totally option too.

My cruiser is neglected because of the little red and white sling shot. Haha.

I'll get to the cruiser. Found cracks in head starting by exhaust valves in same two cylinders with cracked pistons. Clearly those two were running hotter than middle two. Maybe intake manifold is limiting air to those two? New head is $2250CAD shipped. Not feeling it...LOL. Even used ones are high right now. Cracks are not into coolant yet, so maybe just put it back on and run it for now. Anyhow, that's the dilemma which causes me to procrastinate. Beginning to feel some very slight interest to engine swap; but will see how it goes.

I was doing some research the other day thinking of building a square tube style log manifold when I read something about four-cylinder engines with firing order 1-3-4-2:
Will have cylinder 1 ending its expansion stroke and opening its exhaust valve while cylinder 2 still has its exhaust valve open and vice versa.

In an undivided exhaust manifold, this pressure pulse from cylinder exhaust blowdown event is much more likely to contaminate the paired cylinder with high pressure exhaust gas. this hurts the other cylinders ability to breathe properly and obviously efficiency.



I wonder if in a cast factory log style manifold the long runners of cylinder 1 and 4 don’t breathe as well? Say if during a push but the egt probe being right in front of cylinder 2 and 3 doesn’t show the true temperature of cylinders 1 and 4 being much further away. Like say a post turbo egt probe reads 200 degrees less just a couple inches further away.

A couple reasons of doing an engine swap now could be that you've got some spare wheels to take the pressure off, and you know the truck is well maintained. If you think of all the little things you've done on the truck that peace of mind and not to mention all of the big and small hits to the wallet really add up to alot...

Interesting thought.

In a racecar engine with digital sensors everywhere they'd probably pick up a pulse and that flow would be less even.


Maybe post a question in the diesel section asking if anyone has ever turbo''d a 3b

I suspect that you're right there is something to the log vs divided But...we're not talking about shaving.5 seconds off a lap time here.

Unless drag 60 is your goal

I have always lived by the rule of if your going to build might as well over build.


My thoughts were I could build a divided manifold for fun and if I could do something, even something small to get more heat out of my motors that should translate into longevity.

Still collecting ideas and weighing a plan.

For the record, when I damaged this motor it was pedal to the floor for three hours straight and probably 250-270f coolant temps. I knew at the time I was probably wrecking it. It's not the motor's fault.

If I go to the effort, it's gotta be something better. 22RE is literally bolt in (engine mounts same as 2lte). There's actually such thing as a RJ78 from Toyota. But I think it would honestly be a step backwards from 2LTE from what I read. Apparently gutless and terrible on fuel in this heavy platform.

If swapping, two rules apply: I'd want to stay Toyota. If diesel, it would have to be direct injection.

On gasser front:
5VZFE (4runner/tacoma motor - would be marginal)
1UZFE (LS400)
2UZFE (Tundra or 100 series cruiser)

On diesel front (would manual swap too)
Maybe 13BT, but I honestly don't think it's much improvement (but prove me wrong by finding an example of someone towing 4000lb with it).

Haha, yeah, thats it. I took a couple pictures too just on lunch hour when I had to run home. So 1,4 share one side and 2,3 the other.
