1) I’m not a diesel mechanic… and learned from an older mechanic who has messed with boats, motorcycles, cars, trucks, show mobiles, and everything else imaginable since the 70s.

2) I was taught that on a higher mileage (more worn) motor, you need to do the top end of the head if you’re replacing rings.

They worked on a friends old car that had a valve issue. To keep costs down when they replaced the one valve that failed, they only lapped the valves by hand (with some valve compound) to minimize the charge. That engine always pushed some blue smoke after that.

So, I’d swap the rings and put them Freback with as little change as it charge as possible, and hopefully it’ll work out. Use current rings on new pistons.

Thanks bikersmurf. Appreciate the thoughts. I did do a pretty comprehensive job on it 5 years ago. So other than the cracked pistons, it's actually pretty fresh and in good shape. This is partly why I don't have it in me to go through everything again. But as mentioned, I'm actually optimistic it'll run just fine after this....

Impressive damage! I can only guess the egt must have higher than 1000?

Yeah nothing wrong with a quick and dirty slamming of new pistons in there as long as there’s no lip here:

If there’s a lip it will just smash up the top ring, not good, If there’s no lip (usually isent on Toyota diesels) you’re good to go! But Definitely put new rings on they are very cheep comparatively to everything else.

Don’t worry about honing, but do a break in as you would a new rebuild, full send, Heavy towing with non detergent oil for the first 1000.

Hi Steve, thanks a lot for your thoughts. I did read about lip there, and it's bad if using brand new rings. But original rings on similar worn pistons would be okay. In any case I'll clean and inspect that carefully. Hmmm, okay you're making me think twice about new rings if there's no lip. Guess pulling extra two pistons isn't that much extra work. But if new rings don't seat, then I have four instead of two with blow-by, haha.

Picked up some cheap but fun temporary wheels. Will actually end up my son's car. Bit of a project, but runs decent. 2006 mini cooper s Rallye. Always thought of these as pos BMW, but after some reading and driving, I have some respect for it....

Maybe you want to stop bringing a knife to a gun fight. 13bt, om 617 or a 1hd-t???

Or the dreamy om606 but that’s s***s more rare that getting head from a wife.

I've been browsing off and on for something to commute in the summer that's a bit more fun than the 60.

I see those cheap sometimes, really I just want something different from the cruiser. I need a break from the 60 haha

Celica I had wasn't bad, but it was a bit meh to drive.

For s***s and giggles you should take one of the Coopers near you for a test drive.

The one I bought was $4400; hard to beat for what it is. Lots around that price point; don't think I'd pay more than $5k. I think 2005-2006 are the only two years worth considering. The supercharge models have a 6 speed Getrag transmission! The engine's are pretty much indestructible (cast iron blocks). Power steering and radiators are the biggest issues; you'll see a few ads mention that.

Ours is 6 speed Aisin auto (wife wanted that for our kid...oh well, it's okay actually). But watching videos of things as simple as changing supercharger oil remind me of peeling away layers of an onion!! :bang: Very tightly packed. I actually detest red cars; but the price was right as was options and previous work done etc.

This manual one in Victoria is what I wanted to look at. Sounds well maintained, and the color sits a lot better with me. Price is good I think ($4500). Better car than what I bought from looks of it.

I might have trouble getting over the fact that 1996 is the newest vehicle I've ever owned

So fuel economy wise how does this Cooper compare? My first tiny cruiser look would be the 2001-2003 VW TDI. Two passed us on this last trip into the interior effortlessly passing in the snow sludge at speed. And I reckon for a lot less in fuel!! Understatement of the year

I've had a few tdi golf's / jettas still among my favourites...

Get amazing mileage and nice to drive

That’s cool! With two sets of tires and obviously a decent owner sure would be worth looking at. You should buy that for yourself. You can leave it at my place for a while

Yeah my Passat was insane on fuel. 1300+kms to a tank . I had a 100% flat highway commute at the time. Was over 60mpg (imperial 🙄)

Was also insane to work on. Allen screws in places no Allen screw should be.:bang:

Ya wife wants another volvo... I think I'd rather a tdi passat...

VW diesels have always attracted me, but they seem a bit like dodge Cummins. Fantastic motors, but keeping everything thing else working is quite a chore.
