So i've only had my 40 on the road for a couple of weeks and its always had a loud whine from the gearbox/t-case. This morning one my way home it changed to a knocking. I dropped the oil out of both and found afew :) metal shavings.

anyway decided to pull it all apart and see if i could fix it. After a bit of a struggle getting it all out i had it on the bench and in bits.

There was no metal in the gear box and lots in the t-case so that was where i was looking. lots more filings and lots of scrapes on the case but couldnt find anything that looked broken. started to scratch my head and i finally noticed that the knob (bit on the inside of the casing which the bolts screw into) for the top retaining bolt for the rear output shaft bearing retainer had been ground down almost 10mm.

after reassembling the output shaft and all its gear, bearings ect. i've descovered that the angled roller bearing on the back of the shaft had not be set on properly and that there were not enough shims in the assembly to stop it for shifting.

anyway end of the story is that after a good clean up and fitting everything together with the rights bits its not going to be as $$$$$ as i was worried it might be and ita stopped that whine :)

Congrats - doesn't it feel wonderful to troubleshoot and fix problems without having to pay out the a$$ for it!!
