hey,
so i found an FJ im interested in, but i want to check with you guys to see if its worth what he's asking. i think it is, with the amount of mechanical work done, but i really dont have a clue.
might be trading him my DD (1997 subaru outback sport) for it, so i dont want to get screwed and end up with something thats not kosher for a DD.

heres what he said:

Yes, the vehicle is still for sale.

I'll attach all the pics I have.

It has only soft doors. I'm not sure about the mileage, never checked it.
It is a chevy 350 with a quadrajet and headers. It has a Gryphin aluminum
racing radiator. The body tub is aluminum. The brake system was rebuilt.
New master cylinder. All four rear wheel cylinders were rebuilt. Replaced
lines etc. Brakes work better than the brakes on my Durango.
Rear end was rebuilt. L.S. installed with new axle seals, etc.

It is a good rig. Starts and runs well. I would drive it anywhere, very dependable.
I haven't done much with the body. It could use paint I guess. I always felt it
I painted it I wouldn't want to take it off-road anymore.

You said you live in Central PA. I've been to Paragon!!

i'll attach the pics he attached. he is asking $5000 OBO. i have my subaru n the market for $4300. with what appears to be a lack of ambulance doors/hatch, only soft doors, and no real paint, i think im OK for offering that trade.

also, i'm not too excited about the 35"s. the 350 chevy is fine, but im going to eventually be doing a turbodiesel. goal of my FJ40 project is a DD diesel with good mileage, but capable offroad. i live in the mountains an hourish north/west of Harrisburg, so i need something to just get up my driveway. let alone have fun in the mountains ;)

verify what hes says with the tub being new, etc. and it may be worth the trade. GM 350's can be reliable and powerful but it depends on the quality of the conversion, etc...
is that an auto tranny? rebuilt? transfer case?

brian said:
how handy are you with the wrenchs and fire starters?

? im confused.

as for the tub and conversion, i'll be sure to ask him. like i said, i will be throwing a diesel in there eventually, hopefully by end of summer/or 2006, if i would get it. and depending on my work schedule, and college schedule...summer goes so fast!!

why don't you just buy a BJ42???

They are all 25 years old now so getting them from Canada is a lot easier. Not much more than what your price is and you get WHAT you want.

thats a valid point, but ive looked and cant seem to find one in good body/cosmetic shape. there was a guy i talked to about two he had for sale as a package deal, but they both needed complete tubs and some frame work. he wants $4k. plus, its a long way away. check him out http://cruisers.bitwalla.com/forsale.html
complete rust buckets.

also, with a deal like this one, i may be able to get rid of my car and not have to deal with the money for the '40, and then trying to sell my car. *shrug* makes sense in my mind right now, but then again ive been sitting on a mower since 8am :D

got a response back from him, this is what he said:
Hi,
Right, no hard doors, and no rear doors. It's pretty much a summer rig for me.

I don't know when the tub was installed. The rig was rebuilt a few years ago.
It was a frame up rebuild.

It has power steering and it is tight. I can drive at 65 with no wandering.

The 350 was installed during the rebuild. All the work was done by the same person,
I just don't know who he is.
Th350 automatic with a B&M shift kit. Shifts quickly and solidly. It was also rebuilt.
The t-case is stock Toyota, and it also works well. Has Warn hubs installed.
The rest of the running gear except the L.S. rear end is stock Toyota.

I have no trips planned. I am selling the cruiser because I don't have the time for it.
It just sits in the garage most of the time taking up space I could use.

If you wanted to use the rig as a daily driver, it would probably need doors. I'm not even
sure if the heater works, never needed it.

This one looks like a great deal for something that *realistically* doesn't appear to need much work.
4 Wheel Auto *for sale*
Maybe twice what your looking at spending (and I understand the car part) but remember that all the little stuff will annoy and nicle and dime you to death on a daily driver. Doesn't even know if the heat works? never drives it?
you'll probably be wrenching on it a good bit before it's a reliable DD. You'd really have to look it over good though.

Also Aluminum tubs are cool, but you want to SEE it to make sure you're happy with the quality. Many of them have *not so stock* body lines. Also, you have to wire them a certain way (mainly separate ground wires for EVERYTHING) or you'll have big electrolitic issues that will eat your metal away.

Take your time and keep searching for that Diesel you want. (I wish I did  )
