hey all, i currently own a 3rd gen 4Runner, which i've been using as a camping/overlanding rig rather than a crawler. i have a drawer/sleeping platform in the rear, and it fits my exped megamat wide (30 inch width) just fine, but i realized that if i were to try and fit another mattress in the back, it wouldnt fit (theres about 10-15 inches of room left.

in order to accommodate this need to fit two mattresses side by side in the cargo, i was considering selling my rig and picking up a LX. for those of you with one, do you think you could fit two mattresses in the rear cargo space without the sides of them curling up?

thank you for your responses.

Candidly, I don't think you could fit two of those things in the back of any Land Cruiser - well, ok, maybe a Troopy. You might have to go to something like an Excursion, or a 4x4 van.

yeah, i actually went to go check out a lx today and when looking at the cargo space i thought to myself "i dont know if this is gonna work" lol.. would really like to stay small-ish but i guess i might have to go for something a little wider..

I don’t know if this helps or not, but a NEMO Cosmo 3D (long/wide) covers the single drawer perfectly. If the fridge wasn’t there, I think two would fit fine. That said, I usually enter the sleeping area through the rear passenger door with the seat folded forward. Would be a bit of gymnastics to do otherwise.

Can confirm that an ExPed duo fits in the back of a 100.
Perfectly. And it's a great mattress for two people to sleep on.

My only gripe about sleeping in the truck is the lack of headroom to really sit up. If you should need to reach something by your feet in the middle of the night and your SO is next to you, it's very difficult.

Our systems are often used by two people. Megamat Duo and many others fit in both the 4Runners and Land Cruisers.

The interior extents are quite similar between the 4Runner and Land Cruisers. You gain about 3 inches in length and width with the Land Cruiser. Not a huge difference.

5th gen shown, but the 3rd gen is nearly identical in size.

I've had good luck with the above ADGU setup and megamat duo. Have slept in the truck with wife and with a bro. Wife has slept in there with 2 small kids as well. We all have different standards for personal space, but it's definitely doable. Agree that headroom is a challenge but can be managed by putting things that may be needed near your head in advance.

Sorry I don't have a better pic (just this screenshot from a grainy vid). But I'm running two Milliard trifold mattresses on top of my platform. One cot size, and one single size. Together they fit perfect and snug in the back, and dimensions approximate a queen, so queen size sheets fit nicely to cover them. Very spacious for me and my GF.

You can fit a queen sized mattress on the SS1 sleeper platform. I think a queen is 60" wide? I've done it with a 4" foam queen sized mattress and it worked fine but required it to be sort of smooshed in around the tailgate area where the vehicle is the skinniest . I currently run whatever the next size down from a queen is but mostly because I want to fit the side panels on the rear windows.

The Milliard trifold is the best option for comfort but takes up the most space . Mine is going on 6+ years and still feels great to sleep on.

I fit me + my wife and sometimes my dog when he's being a good boy. It's tight in regards to head space but I can prop a pillow up on the front seat head rest and watch my tablet while dozing off... If you a riding solo you would have plenty of room...Second row seats are gone and I've got a piece of plywood on top of the platform to give it a bit more width and support the mattress better

Well, it looks like maybe there's enough room (width) for a decent sleeping platform. But there's still the headroom issue, so I suggest the following:
Place some fridge sliders atop your drawer system, and your sleeping pads on top of them.
That way, you wouldn't have to worry about sitting up in the vehicle - you could just SLIDE yourselves outside and have lots of headroom!
Better yet - electrify the sliders and all you'd do is push a button and Zip! Of course, you'd have to put stops on the slide rails so you wouldn't be ejected out of the car and onto the ground...

lol, picturing this is making me laugh. and I'm going to assume you're just kidding but jokes on you when I add slides and motorize my mattress for easy entry / exit

But nah really, this setup is totally fine as is. It's not a standup camper but when it's time to for bed, crawl in, spark a doobie, and doze off

I built this sleeping platform:

I sleep with an Exped MegaMatt (one person) on the driver side and have TONS of room on the passenger side. Another Exped MegaMatt would fit over there, easy.
