hi there . looking for some info ,truth . does this make sense ? .someone told my buddy if he wanted to run all chevy running gear with a centered t-case . that some guys just flip the fj40 rear end upside down . move the drive train as far to the drivers side as possible and run the drive shaft like that . also giving you a high pinion diff . better drivline angles . they said it will almost line up . t-case to rear diff . .has anybody heard of this or done this . will the rear end run upside down , just add more gear oil . any info on this would be greatly appreciated

Jake

Just flipping the whole axle would be a great idea if you wanted 4 gears in reverse. You can flip the housing, but not the 3rd member.

No.
That person should be smacked repeatedly about the head and torso with a long side inner axle.

#1: If you turn the axle over, the shafts (and hence the tires) will be turning the wrong way. Not to mention the lack of proper oiling to your new high(er than the oil) pinion. I guess you could pull the third member and put it back the right way, but that's not what you said. Besides:

#2: If you flip the axle, the diff will be just as far off-center to the other side, so why would that make anything line up better? If you're going to put the entire drivetrain offcenter to accomodate, why not just do it to the right in the first place? I'm not recommending this route either, just pointing out the flaws here.

#3: If you're going to run an all-chevy drivetrain, why not just put a chevy axle in too? Or if you don't want full-width or the hassle of shortening, a toyota minitruck rear axle?

Actually, the pinion is offset in the casting by about 1.5 inch to the passenger side, so flipping the housing would make it closer to the center.

Ahh. I stand corrected. Sorta.

Man that sucked!! Went back and lost all of my text...
Anyway, here goes again... I'm glad I decided to search these forums. Great information here!
I'm looking to do the same (flip a 9" ford axle). Anyone know if the differential will line up perfectly when rotating 180 deg.? Any reservations on doing this? Any consequences?

My question is if your dumping all this money into a conversion, why not get an axle that would work instead of trying to mess with geometry and flip one. Why not just find a factory axle(such as a mini) that would work. If you do flip it not only would you probably have to run reverse rotation gears, but if anything ever breaks your creating unnecassary headaches. I would put some time into looking at cruisers that have already been converted before i spend any cash. Cruiser owners are usually more than happy to tell you what works and what doesnt

I'm still trying to figure out why some of us are trying to perfect a near perfect vehicle. Some of the ''Improvements'' I've seen asked about lately are making me scratch my head. Gee Whizz, I gotta V-8, I gotta FJ60 Power Steering swap, But Damn, unless you're building some Rock Crawler or something, there's something about the Natural Beauty of a 40 in its intended environment you can't get from another vehicle made today. I'm off my soapbox.

ive used the isuzu stuff also disc brakes.drum ebrake ,almost same gear ratio ,center diff ,same 6 bolt patern.limit slip and dana 44 .and have logged over 260,000 miles on 2 of them with no problems.unless your a die hard rock crawler fj40s dont need any improvements .
