One of the local CSC members showed me his old Y-Pipe off his 80 and how very restrictive the 2 tubes leading into the single pipe transition become. The 2 pipes are squeezed down to 50% of thier diameter and are seperated until they meet with the single tube. We chop-sawed the old pipe to show this feature.

Following the old adage of "the more air in and the more air out" leads to better performance and gas mileage, I took his advise and looked into the Magnaflow 23120 pipe. This is 404 Stainless that also incorporates the first catalytic converter. As you can see the new pipe is full diameter throughout the Y for much better flow.
A few years ago I replaced the pinched down section of the exhaust pipe over the 3rd rear crossmember to help my supercharger breathe well but I didnt realize that the big restriction up front at the Ypipe. I dont expect huge differences, but will monitor my Ultraguage for mpgs and see how it performs with some driving.

The install was more time consuming than thought due to the old studs, nuts, and O2 sensor that didnt like being disturbed after so many years. The fitment is a direct bolt up as advertised and fit well. The kit comes with all the gaskets that are needed too.

The old pipe was not in the best of shape and the first cat spit out a fair amount of cat sand when removed due to age. I like that the new first cat is shaped to not hang down to catch any rocks.

@murf , Glad you went ahead and did it. @LandCruiserPhil was given my old one, and we spent some time talking about this at length. I am very happy with the Magnaflow and I still have the stock muffler and section in the rear. That should be going away soon. I noticed better throttle response and a healthier sound immediately upon install.

And my ugly maroon cruiser with peeling clear coat has very little rust and everything came off of mine very clean and easy! :)

Thats for turning me onto it Jason! When you showed me the first time how the pipes are reduced to 50% of of original diameter I was a little suprised.

I really like it so far

I did as well ~

Mine was a little tougher. Even the front O2 sensor decided to start acting weak after we disturbed it. Being original, it was better to replace it anyway.

Just had mine replaced as well, along with the remainder of the exhaust by Performance Exhaust in Phoenix. (between Greenway and Bell on 36th)

Last two tanks have been a tad over 18mpg.

:flipoff2:

I do need to take it back to Russ at PE as he wanted to try leaving off the fart can, but around 2500 she is a bit obnoxious for a Lexus inside. He also put a Magnaflow muffler in and went over the framerail after the cat. I'm only running the single cat and no codes.

He charge me $300 for the whole thing including the mounting of the passenger side Bump-It Offroad step slider, which would not fit before the with basterdised non-OEM system that was in there from a PO. I ordered the Y-Pipe from Summit.

When I had my exhaust done I also went back and installed the fartcan resonator. Took the last of the drone out.

Where did you put it? Stock location?

Drove her up to Moab today, and while not bad I'd rather not hear anything.

which trails are you running in Moab ? :bounce: :steer:

My ehaust is altered from stock but bssically near stock spot being about 16" from tailpipe.

After driving it, no difference in sound which is what I was hoping for
Have fun in Moab Don, take many pics!

I drive to and from work the same way every day (for many years now) and have been able to get very consistent mpg readings. Over the last couple years, I clear and reset the avg mpg every few months for a good sample size and no matter the time of year, etc. I always get the same consistent mpg avg on the ultraguage. It is a mix of 40% street and 60% freeway. Seems like even throwing in a long trip or two still netted the same results = 14.1 mpg (this includes a 5% correction for the speedometer)
After this ypipe has been installed, I am seeing an increase of just under a half mile per gallon at 14.5 with no other changes. Doing the math, it will take 6 years to pay for itself :D lol

really, just knowing that there was that much restriction to affect mpgs that much makes me feel like I did something good for my LC.

Just drive more and shorten your payback time

Does it sound any different and any noticeable seat of the pants feel.

Seat of the pants, it seems to be a little snappier when i get on it. The sound is thankfully about the same as before the change.

Compressed air in + easy exit out = :D

by the way: My ultraguage bumped up to a true .5 mpg over previous (14.6 vs 14.1) on the drive in this morning. Maybe cut off a few months of ROI :hmm:

I will say that after doing mine and putting the 315s on afterwards, I am impressed. I am still averaging about 14 after a 10% correction. That is with the lift and 315s. I don't drive it easy and still drive 80-85 on the highway. Just highway driving is still netting me between 15-16. I do feel like there was a good increase in throttle response. And I am still running stock from the 2nd cat back minus the resonator. I have to think that I would gain even more if I got rid of the rear section and the stock brick.....err I mean muffler.

I also picked up a solid .5 mpg. That being said, the pooper pipe system that I had prior was a real mess. The down pipe had been cut and a hard 45* was installed to a single cat of unknown origin to the stock muff and then the squenched pipe over the rear cross member and out through the fart can.

Now I have the MF Y and cat, over the frame to a MF muff and then out the back.

Slightly PO'd at Performance Muffler as I called Russ the next morning after install and told him to hold the fart can as I wanted it back on, but I was headed to Utah for a couple of weeks and would not be able to bring it back for a bit to put it on. Well guess what. Yeah, it is gone, seems to have disappeared. While the noise is not bad by any means, this is not a engine that I find interesting to listen too. Speaking of sound, I can now hear what I think is the exhaust gas in the Y-Pipe itself (or maybe cat) when you get on it at lower speeds.

Is it snappier? Yes. And so is Safari for those Apple fans that know the inside joke. Seriously, it is a tad bit on the butt-o-meter. I wish I would have done a couple of Dynolicious iPhone runs pre and post to see if there was any delta. But I really think there was.

Bottom line, happy with the price from Summit and speed in getting it (next day) and with Performance Muffler. Great price with quality hardware and an owner that is familiar with 80's.

those trails are mongo scenic

The size of the pipe pre and post cat looks larger than the other aftermarket manufactures.. Looks to be the sbest option I have seen by a long shot!
