fj80 vs 100 series

It's funny how us folks have different reads on their vehicles. I feel the exact opposite. My 80's feel like the light-duty unibody creakers and rattlers and stuff like that. My 100 feels like the armoured truck. Solid and tight as a rock.

80's still exists??? wow..:flipoff2:

Get a 100 and a call it a day..

like many on this board, I own one of each, an 03 and a locked and lifted 96. Bottom line, my 80 just feels cool, i love looking at it. I don't ever gaze at my hundy, I just put gas in it. If you like starbucks, rolex and five hundred dollar shoes, get the 100, it's a good accessory for all that sh#t....:flipoff2:

I have both an 80 and a 100 series. I think I can summarize the differences between them like this, “The 100 is a nice car, the 80 is a nice truck”. For daily driving and weekend warrior the 100 wins hands down. For a serious trail machine, non-daily driver the 80 wins hands down. This is really an apples to oranges comparison. These rigs are so very different in their design and function. The 80 is a brutal thug of a truck. Where as the 100 is a refined comfort cruiser. I would not want to seriously wheel my 100, it’s just too big, too low and too nice.

x2

Two 80s and a 100 later, I can't argue with this assessment. The 80 is still my favorite, and is definitely the better wheeler, but we wanted our wagon to do double duty as the family hauler, and for that purpose the 100 is superior. Both are super reliable, though both do have their mechanical weaknesses. The 80 in pretty much every way is easier to fix on the side of the trail, the 100 is a much more plush ride, your priorities will tell you which is more important. For most people's use here in the land of fast food joints, drive-through Starbucks, superhighways, and a gas station and dealership on every block, the 100 reigns supreme. If you need to drive across the Kalahari, the Simpson, or the Sahara, take the 80.

My $0.02,

I have had 4 80s and 4 100s. I prefer the 100s. I do not get to wheel enough to own an 80 and the 100feels like a jacked up S class. And when I have a chance to drive aorund the globe (pipe dream) I will take my 100 series with IFS. And if I had 25k laying around it would have a 1HD-FT/E already installed.

plus the sweet sound of the hundy V8 is intoxicating when you hop on the skinny... that's tech, isn't it?

ahem... the throttle is much more responsive on my 100 than 80 series

Somethings wrong:confused: I gots 2 of them there 100 and none of that other s*** you are talking about.

Looking at a FJ100 here in my town.. 2006 with 150k miles, they want 25k for it.. no way! What should I expect to pay for it? Should I hold out for one with less miles and do the ebay thing?

Having both an 80 & a LX 470, I have to agree with previous posters, the 80 is a nice truck for the trail and hard use and the LX 470 is great for the family and lighter duty use (my LX is totally stock).

I don't see the difference with throttle responds as my 80 is intercooler with a supercharger with numerous other mods. The creature comforts of the LX sure are nicer than my 80 but again it's comparing apples to oranges.

All that being said, I will not be replacing either the 80 or LX 470 with anything else.

$25k for that kind of mileage is insane. Keep looking.
I'm not sure how much but I would say a lot less. Check out Kelly Blue Book and Auto Trader to get a rough idea of what to pay.

Also, I don't like the grill (personal preference) on the 2003's and up...is there a major diff between the 98-2002 that I should consider?

Here's a rough summary:

98-00 lockers
01-02 ATRAC - VSC, but no lockers, has LATCH for baby seats
03+ more power, better transmission, new dash, more Airbags
06+ even more power, AHC

On its way somewhere else I presume given the direction it has taken

I don't know how many times this 80/100 stuff has come up but too many times. Depends on what you like, what your needs are, and how good a driver you are. I have never been anywhere off road my 100 couldn't easily traverse, and I have been plenty of places. It just seems to crawl up and over things with ease. Rubicon Trail? That isn't a place for a 100, or in reality even an 80 even though an 80 is slightly smaller.

I'll take a 100 over an 80 any day of the week. More power, comfort, and 5 speed transmission in my year model, running 34" tires with no problems.

Since you live in New York City have you ever tried crawling over any of those obnoxious cab drivers ? :)
If you have post some pic's!
