https://forum.ih8mud.com/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=404624#I'm thinking of selling my 1992 FJ and trying a 1994 Range Rover with really low miles and from the original owner w records etc. I know the Range Rover will be a headache and maybe I won't do it. My primary qualm with the Toyota is that it is severly underpowered. I've driven newer FZJ80s like 12994 and newer and they seem to have much better power and throttle response. But I'm trying to consolidate potential costs I might anticipate for the FJ if I keep it. I know what most of the FJ electronics and suspension stuff costs but I'missing this data point. FJ80 Has 175k and never had any trouble with the truck. Not a thing other than the fried EFI relay problem that I need to fix by upgrading the wires...but what will the tranny cost to rebuild? Anyone had to have it done? Seems to be fine now and I've heard they don't often need a rebuild before 250k...is that true or likely estimate for major service interval?
Cheers,
Andrew :o

you are deciding whether to sell your cruiser and buy a range rover based on the expected lifetime and possible replacement cost of your currently perfectly functional transmission? I guess you really just want us to jump in a tell you a 175k cruiser will outlast a 20k rover. I know which vehicle I'd want for a daily driver, but please don't take my word for it. Do a search here and try to find a report of a tranny for an 80 (you don't say which year) that needed rebuilding. Go to a rover site and do a search on tranny rebuilds. Compare and report back !!

I would hang on to the 80 to tow the Rover to the shop.

The tranny on an 80 is overbuilt. It's beefy and will last a very long time. I'm at 143k on my truck and have not had a single problem with the tranny, has never had to be touched and the truck was owned new by my father in 91' first and now me since dec. 03'. The trannys on cruisers last forever....the anything on a rover lasts, well you see where I'm going with this. :D

Keep the cruiser, it'll be less of a headache, unless you want a new(er) truck then try for another 80?

What year truck?

What tranny?

More info needed.......

Oh and Landcruiser cause everything else just sucks....... :flipoff2:

If you wish to step backwards that far, have at it.

I thought you said you wanted to avoid a headache
Look at JD Powers reports on 5 year satisifaction of the range rover.
Very low, Toyota is highest
Unless you are talking about a defender and are    mechanic you are in for a headache
$0.02

We just had a a440 for a FJ62 done here in Colorado for a customer. Just the rebuild was close to 2000 dollars due to it needing a new output shaft and a new case for the plantary gear set. Then labor to r and r. That price included the t-case rebuilt by the tranny shop. Now for a 80 series it may be about the same as I would want the soliniods replaced on the electric models when the rebuild is performed. later robbie

Going from a Toyota to a Rover for reliability purposes would be like moving from a nuclear fall-out shelter to a trailer home because you are afraid of tornadoes.

In terms of power, the only p38 Range Rovers with any (assuming the 94 you are talking about is the newer body style and not the older) are the 4.6 models, which weren't made until 99 or so.

If it's power you want, your best bet will be to get a 93 or newer Land Cruiser.

:D

That's pretty damn funny..............................;)

I've got 220K on my 91 FJ80, it's been in my family since new, other than being slow, I can't complain. The only maintenance it has required has been an alternator at 155K and regular maintenance.

Selling your Cruiser for a Rover? That would be like trading in my '04 cobra for a honda civic/ricer- that cruiser would out perform the Rover in day of the week when wheelin! :flipoff2:

Neither the French nor the English have any business manufacturing vehicles.

My .02 worth.
