Hi everyone!

I'm looking to replace an existing head unit in 80 series TLC with some aftermarket 1-DIN thingie (JVC!), just the stereo itself, nothing else. Then, probably, stuck CB UHF in spare slot, but that is a different topic.

Unfortunately, I'm utterly dumb and have no manuals on what does it take to plug something in instead of the existing one.

My view is that I would need some sort of DIN-compatible pocket, some sort of wiring harness adaptor and that is it.

Could anyone please give me a hint of what it takes (and how to do it in terms of removal of internal panels, etc) to replace stock stereo?

I'm especially curious of whether or not it is possible to plug in into existing wiring for speakers and where to get power.

Any links to FAQ or existing posts or anything like this would be appreciated - wasn't able to find anything specific on my own.

Also, is there a preferable place to stuck in an UHF unit? I'm looking at one with remote face panel, which means that base unit can be hidden inside the dash. The question is - where inside the dash? And how hard is it to remove the dash itself?

Thanks.

2nd Crutchfield. Purchased an Eclipse single din. Crutchfield includes the double din conversion cubby piece and a wiring harness adapter to go from your new head unit to your factory wiring. Hell...even I did it! Only pain is getting the trim around the radio off. Several screws and be careful! Tug gently until you see where any screws or plastic clips/plugs are and you'll be fine. I found it much easier to unplug all the connections to the heating/air etc. and pulled the entire lower panel off.

I just did mine

I also went through Crutchfield, they are very good. They answered many questions I had throughout the install process. Check the faq's too, they have good writeups. I got a pioneer 4000 deh and it's a major upgrade, plus I now have an extra cubby below it. Make sure and unplug your factory amp if you have one before you install the new stereo, it will blow the 10 amp dome light fuse, took me a couple hours of cussing before I finally consulted mud and it was fixed in minutes. Enjoy!

Another vote for Crutchfield, but would they ship to Australia with competitive prices? You should have the same kind of company down here, no?

Ahh! The 10amp dome fuse. Ebag333 and I just noticed this past weekend working on different electrical gremlin that my dome fuse was a 15 and not 10. Put a 10 in and it blew. Put the 15 back in the meantime until I get to the store for more fuses.

Question: Where is the best place to disconnect the stock amp? or maybe it should just be totally removed?

Hmm, looked at crutchfield.

They list two speakers in the dash, two in front doors and two in rear doors.

I have two in dash (which are full-size 4", by the way, not the thin ones that people on this forum post photos of), two in passengers doors and one crappy subwoofer in right rear panel (BTW, anyone knows what size is it?). Which kinda means that no speaker from my rig matches an US version.

That's going to be fun.

The pocket is available from Toyota #55521-14050-01
$33 list is a bit pricey but it's a lot nicer than any of the generic pockets
I have seen.
See pic. My single DIN Rockford w/ factory pocket.
Perfect fit.

Thanks for this part number! You have no idea how much time I spent scouring the web trying to find a Toyota part number for a single din pocket. So many other after market options pop up!

not sure about - Toyota OEM quality -
here is the free "kit pocket" from Crutchfield that comes with a H/u purchase

no complaints on my part....

replacement of the h/u and stock speakers is fairly rudimentary (remove stock amp is a must) - tons and tons of posts (of which I have contributed on)

if you need more 1:1 direction - simply shoot me a PM

I used the Kenwood TM-V71A UHF/VHF radio in the bottom DIN. I bought a bracket from Home Depot and made my own mount for the face, base unit mounted under the driver seat.

Good info - I intend to do this and install a single DIN CB in the lower slot. Any recommendations on the brand/model for a good CB that fits?

Thanks for the linkeee

I agree with Retro Five, and I have installed the same Cobra single DIN CB below my JVC head unit that he did. It's clean, and you don't need a pocket, you get a CB in dash with no external speaker needed, and you don't lose the ash tray (as the mini Uniden install in ash tray location requires). I like to keep change in my ash tray.
