Knowing that the FJ80 also used a 3F-E, does anyone know if the 90-92 models (FZJ started in 93 right?) used the same ECU as the FJ62?

I don't think so because the part numbers are different. ZJ80's apparently also have two different ECUs, changing in '95.

Interesting. I wonder what changed between the two, or if there's even any difference between them as far as the other electronic components. Is it possible the FJ80 just got an ECU more refined to draw a bit more performance (or economy? lol) from the 3F-E.

I believe that the FZJ has two ECUs because of the mid model required implementation of OBD-II (93-94 are not OBD-II). That likely had a direct impact on the hardware due to the standard OBD-II diagnostic output and port requirement. Oh and they changed from AFM to MAF at some point. That might impact ECU design (at least the data tables).

There are a couple of subtle differences for the '80 3FE. The alt is, I believe, 90 amps (at least some of them are). Overhanger at one point told me that the ignitor has more output. Not sure if there are any other emissions or other differences that might influence ECU differences.

So you think it may be possible to use an early FJ80 ECU in an 62?

I'm looking into this because Jet is now making a performance module for "90-up Land Cruisers", and knowing the FJ80 used a 3F-E, I got curious as to whether their ECU could be used in a 62.

JET will do a chip for a stock FJ-62. I've talked to them several times and, at least with the folks that I talked to, they never gave me any indication that they knew what they were doing or could tell me any details about their process. I really wanted to know exactly what their process was because our ECUs require hardware modification in order to make any changes (unlike similar era Chevy chips with removable EEPROM chips or modern chips). They couldn't or wouldn't tell me. They also gave me run around answers on whether or not they could take other engine mods into account (one guy said yes the other guy said no, off the shelf program only). In other words, I got no sense of confidence in their product from talking to them.

Edit: I also remember at least one other FJ-62 owner with a JET modified chip saying the only thing that he noticed different was a lighter wallet. You're probably almost as good by just giving yourself 3-5 more degrees of timing at the distributor.

Interesting. Looking at what the programming module does for its hookup to the FJ80 ECU, I'm wondering if it'll still work with a 62's ECU. Given the different ignitions and connector styles, using an FJ80 ECU looks to be out of the question. Especially since there's no way I'm going to cut and splice wires to use the newer ECU.
