Hi guys, Im new to this and I need your help, How can I gain more horsepower for my 1991 fj80?? Is it possible to put in a turbocharger? or how about those Racing Chips?? Thanks ...

A Turbo charger is about it for major HP gain, it will have to be custom, it's pretty safe to say that a turbo set up will cost more than your vehicle is worth.

Stay away from the chips, they are a waste. Search a bit around here as this has been discussed at length. Seems like exhaust and tweaking the timing a bit would get you a few more ponies, but not much.
Welcome..

Two more cylinders....;)

I'm going to build a 2F high compression short block, and throw it underneath my 3FE head. Headers and a KNN. That should give the FJ80 some more grunt.

Yep, a nice clean latter-model rebuilt 2F shortblock for some extra displacement, head milled. This comes at the expense of redoing all your accessory mounts and fabbing up some new fan shrouds as the water pump offset is different 2F -> 3F.

A few I think have done turbos but that's got to get darn $ darn early.

That 3F-E is made for endless tracks of Earth, not for any speed :)

How much money are you planning to spend on this rig?

I'm thinkin about under 1k ,no money yet, im just looking for more power when merging on the freeway , so i guess i need more low end power rather that speed .....thanks..

$1K won't even get you through the door if you are interested in a Turbo/Super set up on the 3FE.

Just enjoy the scenic view on all of your mergings onto highways. Don't worry--the 1FZ doesn't do much better.

Cheers.

If you spend under $1K you are really just throwing money away. Most modifications in that price range just don't justify themselves. It would be better spent on preventative maintenance, stereo or creature conforts.

Just my 2 cents

get a second squirrel? :D

Now that all the head gasket prone wind bags are done........
You have not told us about how many miels on your rugged and reliable 3FE but might I suggest complete tune up, air, plugs wires distributor cap, and reset the valve clearances. with tha your in it $200, then you can spend another $800 on the exhaust, This spring I will be cutting out the twin cat design on mine and going single high flow cat. This MIGHT help with the hp but will definitely get rid of the rattling at idle.
The 3FE will never be a race engine and will always feel slow, but it will not let you down and is a lot easier to maintain than the 1fze, remember its a damn tractor motor and treat it as such.

Good point that all the O2 sensors on the 3FE are PRE-cat and you could cut the cats out of the picture if you wanna go down that route.

I bet sans cat you can get $3-400 on nice dual- or single-plumbing. I may have gained a LITTLE bit of power on my 3F-E with this approach. There is another staunch 3FE supporter on this board who is debating running dual pipes into some glass packs. In the grand scheme of engines, the 3F-E isn't really THAT loud (guess how I know :( )

you could get headers also that and exhaust would probly be your best bet and that would put you right about 1000.
headers from man-a-fre.com for the 3fe cost 400 and you could get good exhaust for 5 or 6

I agree that the good tune-up and the exhaust is the way to go to gain a little zip outta the 3FE. Be careful of headers though. They can be a real pain in the arse. They are notorious for developing gasket leaks and if they are not high quality (see expensive) they rust away. The exhaust on the 3FE is not very restrictive anyway until you get to the cats and especially the y pipe, so headers will likely not give that much benefit. If your cats flow well (ream em out to be sure) go with a cat back system, less restrictive muffler, and dual exhaust. It will add a little gas mileage and zip to the 3FE and the truck will run cooler (helped immensely in the hot carolina summers).....

a cheaper alternative that no one has mentioned yet, try sea foam treatment?
while not getting extra HP, it could help liven it up a bit.

Change the cam. Boost the compression. Open up the exhaust Maybe up the injectors. This will make a notable difference. At this point redoing the ECM is worthwhile too.
