fj80 Needs help on Horsepower gain....

I have sold parts/given advice for a couple of people who have done it themselves. THey were impressed with the gains, but I can't quantify it any more than that. I have one I am building to hopefully be powering my wife's '62 by this summer. I'll have better first hand info then.

The cam/compression/exhaust (along with increased induction) can wake a 2F up like you would not believe. I have no reason not to expect the same when done to the 3FE. Maybe better, as the cam in the 3FE is better suited to the lower rpm desries of the 2F. A little midrange/top end improvement should make a bigger difference in the 3FE since it is happier up there anyway. I'll be much happier pushing a 3FE to 6 grand than I am a 2F. ;)

In addition to the changes I mentioned previously, milling bore for the throttle plate (and fitting a matching plate of course) will increase airflow in a imilar manner to installing a larger carb on a non-injected motor. I've talked to a couple of other guys who insist that this made a noticable difference. It will probably be an important factor in a well balanced "warm up" of the 3FE.

Again, once I get this motor done, I will have first hand info on the entire package in this particular motor, rather than having to rely on the input of others. I have high hopes for a very noticable improvement. I can make a 2F play with the V8s with this approach and I expect about the same from the 3FE.

You should try a 3F-E in a 40, it's awesome :)

I maybe swinging a deal for a wrecked FJ80 if the price works out the way I want it to. Not much there except engine and drivetrain. So who knows... I may put one in a '40. Or maybe the 45 shorty I've had sitting for several years now. ;)

Where do you get a different cam for the 3FE? How would you boost the compression?

Anywhere you get a cam for a 2F. It's the same cam.

In my case I send several cores at a time to my regrinder and they send them back with a new profile.

Boost the compression just like the 2F (and most pother engines). Cut the head.

The mechanics at the local dealership told me I could drill out the little cap on the intake assembly (down by the air cleaner) and there is a screw inside. Turning the screw all the way in redirects the airflow and adds some boost. Anyone else done this mod?

Boost? You got a turbo?

"adds some boost"

No turbo...a figure of speech.

Hey, i just bought an fj80. My dad used to race them for toyota in africa he's contacting his old buddies and engineers for some help as far as power :) which in the end should'nt cost much to add power.

Thx.

Two free "mod's" that really do work:

1) Make sure your tire pressure is correct (at the high end, in fact).

2) If it's never been done, adjusting the kickdown cable to move the tranny shift points will make a huge difference; it will almost feel like a different engine.

Another free one is to simply adjust your expectations.

I have blown a lot of money over the past 30 years trying to get a few more HP out of engines and what I learned is the old racers addage: "There is no replacement for displacement."

Get a 2UZ. Not sure about the cost, heard a swap like that can run up almost five grand, but I've also heard it's completely worth it.

Additionally, you prolly average 12 - 13 MPG anything you do to add ponies is gonna drop that number like a rock!!! Do the tune up and tranny cable adjustment, if you can't live with it after that, sell it to me!!!!
